About this Item
A translation by Jiri Pober into Czech of the 1937 Kenneth Roberts novel "Northwest Passage." Size of the binding: 5 ½ in. x 8 1/8 in. x 2 1/8 in., 498+ pp. (publisher's colophon page); 2 fold-out maps with Czech titling, showing (1) Rogers' 1759 St. Francois route, & (2) North America (but not Mexico), 1765. In a striking carved leather binding by Jan Sobota, with his stamp on the back paste-down endpaper. The full, brown leather binding features a standing figure of a Colonial Ranger with a long rifle, on the front and back covers; the details are carved into the leather, on a hand-tooled, stippled, darker brown background; the spine features two carved leather long-rifles in darker brown, with stamped titling in dark brown, top-edge stained brown, sewn headbands, dark brown, suede-covered endpapers; in a dark brown, leather-textured cloth wrap-around chemise, with a lighter brown, leather title label, and a brown suede lining. In a matching, dark brown, leather-textured cloth-covered slipcase, with lighter brown leather edging to the front ends. The novel, about Major Robert Rogers' (1731-95) expedition, was a source for the 1940 King Vidor film, based on the first part of this book. The color of leather and the designs, chosen by inventive Czech bookbinder Jan Sobota, are meant to evoke a Colonial American bookbinding, the dress and arms of the period of the French & Indian War, and that of Rogers' Rangers, who figure in the story.
