Les notices descriptives des monuments sont imprimées en fr…ançais et en anglais. Il est illustré de 62 planches gravées à l'aquatinte, y compris le frontispice. Y sont notamment représentés le Colisée, le Panthéon, la colonne Trajan, le Temple de Vénus, la Cascade de Tivoli, la Grotte de Neptune, le Pont de Civita Castellana, le Temple de Bacchus, la Villa Médicis, etc. Un des exemplaires avec les planches rehaussées en couleurs. Fils de l'éditeur parisien Jacques-François Mérigot (vers 1720-1799), Jacques Mérigot (Paris, 1760-Londres, 1824) fut l'élève du peintre et graveur Joseph-Marie Vien en 1778. Il exerça ensuite son métier à Paris puis résida à Rome quelques années avant de s'établir à Londres où il fut connu sous le nom de James Merigot. Bel exemplaire en reliure pastiche de Devauchelle. This contains part one 1797 and part two 1799 but only has 47 of 62 original plates. These seem to be some type of proof aquatints. They are all done on a thin pink orange paper that is tipped onto the thicker paper with… the title. One tissue plate is actually over a hand colored plate of itself. We have never seen prints on this type of paper. A few have small tears from being only mounted in the corners. The descriptions are in english and french and there is no foxing to paper. Has both title pages and lists of plates. Plates are really quite striking.

Die zweite Ausgabe eines der prachtvollsten Publikationen über die Ewige Stadt mit großartigen Veduten der antiken Ruinen, der frühchristlichen und barocken Kirchen, der Palazzi und Gebäude aus Mittelalter, Renaissance und Barock. Dabei sind die Ansichten so feingliedrig, so überzeugend und stimmungsvoll wiedergegeben, dass der Band dem Betrachter einen virtuellen Spaziergang durch die Ruinen Roms erlaubt, die überwuchert von der üppigen mediterranen Natur und belebt von entzückenden Staffagen - mit kleinen Fischerbooten auf dem Tiber, Kuhirten im Forum, Spaziergänger über die Engelsbrücke etc. Ganz besonders gut eignete sich die Technik der Aquatinta auch für die Darstellung der vielen Kaskaden, Springbrunnen, Wasserfälle wie etwa in Tivoli. Die erste Ausgabe war in den Jahren 1797-99 in zwei Teilen erschienen. Alle der dekorativen Ansichten sind auf bräunlichem Tongrund gedruckt. Die reizenden Staffagefiguren und das duftig wiedergegebene römische Licht in der Gluthitze des Tages, in der frischen Morgensonne oder dem roten Abendlicht, das die Gebäude zum Leuchten bringt, macht die Tafeln zu besonders stimmungsvollen Capriccios. Die Texte im französich-englischem Paralleldruck. Während die einzelnen Tafeln die Daten des Stichs tragen, etwa 1796, 1797 oder 1798, deuten Titel und Wasserzeichen auf eine Datierung um 1817 hin. Dargestellt sind u. a. das Kolosseum, Pantheon mit Marktständen und Obelisk, die Peterskirche mit der Engelsbrücke und der Engelsburg mit Fischern auf dem Tiber, Trajanssäule, Konstantinsbogen, Titusbogen, Villa der Medici, Concordiatempel, Tempel des Antonius und der Faustina auf dem Forum, der Rundtempel des Forum Boarium (ehemals «Vesta-Tempel") und der Tempel der Fortuna Virilis, die Farnesischen Gärten mit den Cäsarenpalästen auf dem Palatin, Santa Costanza (ehemals «Tempel des Romulus und Remus"), der Bogen des Janus Quadrifrons, eine verwunschene Ansicht des von Laub umrankten Ausflusses der Cloaca Maxima, der Pons Aemilius, die älteste Brücke Roms (auch «Ponte Rotto" genannt), die Cestiuspyramide mit einem Liebespärchen auf der grünen Anhöhe davor, Grabmal der Caecilia Metella auf der Via Appia, Tempel der Minerva Medica, Sant'Agnese fuori le mura und viele Ansichten mehr, ferner Veduten von Tivoli, Terni, Albano, Lago di Nemi, Lago di Albano, Castellana und eine stimmungsvolle Ansicht der Brückenruine von Narni im Mondschein. Hin und wieder winzige Braunflecke, geringer Abklatsch der Tonplatten auf die Seite gegenüber, wenige Textblätter mit kleinen Läsuren und etwas gebräunt, wenige Blätter mit restaurierten Einrissen oder Randläsuren. Originally published in 1797 and 1799, later printings can be dated by the watermarks. The copy offered here has plates watermarked 1817, and the added engraved title page in the later state with J. Hearne's imprint. Plates are dated 1796 and 1798; most are signed by Merigot, others singed by Merigot & Edwards. James (Jacques) Merigot (ca. 1720-1799) was a French artist, engraver and publisher, active in London starting in the early 1790's. The plates of this work represent landscapes or Roman ruins and each of them is accompanied by a bilingual English-French explanatory text on one or two pages. Given the rise of Neo-classicism in the late 18th and early 19th century, the British became fascinated with Roman ruins and many books about Rome were published during this period. This particular work by Merigot was special in that the artist visited each of the ruins, in and around Rome, and drew them "on the spot".
