This is an extremely rare set of the first four issues of this Series, and may be the only four issued before the contents were then published in book form in 1854. Six lithographic plates have 31 hand-colored illustrations on them. The first two issues were printed in 1853; the last two in 1854, The last three issues were printed by McElrath And Baker in New York. Very old colored filing tape along the spines. Two exquisite color plates of butterflies. Good. Fragile, with the expected chipping to the spines and wrappers. Some darkening to the extremities of the hand-colored plates, plate 5 with some small tears that extend just a small amount into one image.…

Born in Switzerland, Prof. Benedict Jaeger (1789-1869) moved to America, where he woked as a naturalist and educator. The Life of North American Insects includes insect species; illustrations and classifications; practical notes on observing and collecting insects; and an early attempt to make entomology accessible. It reflects the 19th Century interest in cataloguing and studying the natural world.…
