New York: G. .P. Putnam & Co., 1856. Quarto (8 3/4" x 5 3/4", 222mm x 140mm) With 6 full page engraved plates. Paper label adhered over publisher on lower title page. Bound in brown cloth decorated in blind with gilt title and leaves on the spine. Frontispiece shows engraving of Sir Hans Sloane, M.D., founder of the British Museum. Light toning and finger soiling. Minor offsetting. Extremities rubbed. Tissue guards. Born in Switzerland, Prof. Benedict Jaeger (1789-1869) moved to America, where he woked as a naturalist and educator. The Life of North American Insects includes insect species; illustrations and classifications; practical notes on observing and collecting insects; and an early attempt to make entomology accessible. It reflects the 19th Century interest in cataloguing and studying the natural world.
