Binding shows some wear commensurate with age, notably scuffing to leather and bumps (please see photos). In sum, a sturdy, well-bound copy with the name F. G. Clarke stamped on spine. Jackson was General Agent of Education in Alaska at time of publication. This comprehensive report follows up on his early 1890s humanitarian mission in which he and Captain Michael A. Healy of the US Revenue Cutter Bear imported reindeer from Siberia to Alaska as a possible solution to First People's chronic food shortage. A permanent reindeer station was established in 1892 and named in honor of Secretary of the Interior Henry M. Teller. This is one of the earlier reports, which was published annually for several years. Contains rich anthropological details on Eskimo life, and natural science information. The photos are quite good, and the map is fresh. While reports for other years are available, the report covering 1897 is scarce.

Includes: Map of Norway, fold out color map of lapland, and very large fold out map of Alaska, all in excellent condition without tears or discoloration. 48 pages of regular text including statistics, suggestion for distribution, purchasing, personnel and buildings. Large appendix includes reports, letters, and telegrams of various congress appointed officials for the project. Hand glued in 1921 newspaper clipping, "Reindeer Meat Soon Will be Staple" proposes the question of the potential popularity and success as a result of introducing Reindeer into Alaska. 55th Congress, 3d session, Senate, Document No. 34. An excellent condition copy of this interesting publication.
