On arrival he finds the post has been filled, and he is at a loose end. As a result of a remarkable accident, he joins a man named Black who is running an Air Service between Nyasaland and Rhodesia; he learns to fly, and is soon a qualified pilot. Just before this, two of Black's planes had disappeared, and on one of his trips Gerald also disappears, so far as his white friends are concerned, and he finds himself in the hands of a native Chief who is working up the spirit of revolt among the tribes with a view of driving the white races out of Africa. The plot might have become really dangerous if Gerald had not by an adroit move, deprived the revolutionaries of their leader at a critical moment.' (Quote from inside front of dustwrapper blurb) ***The Black Planes is a 1930s children's adventure novel by Wilfrid Robertson, set in Africa about the adventures of a pilot, Gerald Dent and a revolt by the native tribes to drive the white races out of Africa. ***First impression of the true first edition, rare to find in its original 1938 fragile pre-war dustwrapper. Of interest to collectors of children's first edition titles. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Jack Nicolle (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. W. E. Johns, born in 1893, was well qualified to be the creator of 'Biggles', one of the most enduring fictional heroes to come out of the post WWI years. In 1917, after serving several months in the Gallipoli campaign, Johns joined the Royal Flying Corps (precursor to the Royal Air…Force) and had what can only be regarded as a hair-raising career in the last year of the war. Flying the unreliable machines of the day he once crashed three aircraft in three days, later getting lost in fog and almost flying into a cliff. He had the misfortune to shoot off his own propeller with the 'synchronised' machine gun twice. Finally in September 1918 he was shot down and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner. Johns remained in the RAF until 1927 and was, at one point, the reluctant commanding officer to T. E. Lawrence (of Arabia). In 1932 he published the first of the 'Biggles' novels, and by 1970 had published 96 titles in the series. Here is a very nice First Edition of one of the earliest works, published in 1938. Note that this is the true first edition and NOT the Pyramid edition, which appeared later in the same year. The original khaki cloth binding is tight and square with a nicely rounded spine. Shelf presentation is very good, with the illustrated spine showing light wear confined to the spine ends and only light soiling. The illustrated front cover likewise shows light wear and soiling, with the buckram showing beneath the decorative cloth at a few spots along the hinge. The blank rear cover shows a few scratches and slightly heavier soiling than the spine and front cover. The contents are clean and tight. The striking color frontispiece is intact and bright. Light spotting is confined to the prelims and final few pages. The text block edges show some age toning, contrasting with the bright text block interior. The clean, white endpapers appear to be new rather than original. There is a single inked initial - an elaborate "W" in blue on the half title.
