Until this book, most research focused on the middle cerebellar peduncles. Early research by Laborde, Ferrier, Turner, Biedl, and others cited here raised q…uestions about the function of the inferior cerebellar peduncle. The author sought to extend their work. They hypothesized that the peduncle exerts a direct influence on the spinal cord and relays signals from the cerebellum to the limbs. The author tested this hypothesis by dividing the inferior cerebellar peduncle on one side of the brain in dogs and studying the resulting effects. Their findings suggest that dividing the inferior peduncle leads to a range of motor, ocular, and sensory problems on the side of the body opposite the lesion. The implications of these results are significant as they provide direct evidence for a pathway through which the cerebellum can influence spinal cord activity. By increasing our understanding of the cerebellum's role in motor control, this book contributes valuable insights for researchers and neuroscientists.
