Geo was launched in the US in 1979 as a general interest magazine, following successful versions of the magazine in Germany and France. It is best known as a showcase of excellent photojournalism and for its in-depth writing. It ceased publication in the US in 1985. Edited by H.J. Kaplan. SIGNED BY BAUGHMAN on the half title and inscribed: "For Howard / at the beginning / of a long friendly / relationship;" the inscription and signature have been written entirely in mirror-writing--backwards and upside down. Howard is Howard Chapnick, the former president of Black Star photo agency and author. A survey of documentary images from Ohio, Michigan, Washington, D.C., NYC, and Brazil made by the author in the mid-1970s, all tied together as a contemplation of stereotypes and self-identification.
