This is the first version of this book, which went through a number of printings and revisions. Orendi was a carpet dealer in Vienna. The book is an early general oriental rug book on classical and 19th century examples from main regions: Persia, Anatolia, the Caucasus, West and East Turkestan. Most pieces are from the Orendi inventory and the rest from various rug dealers and museums. Since the book was published in 1909, the rug examples have to be 19th century or earlier. Book.

In der Darstellung unterscheidet man zwischen floralen, figuralen und geometrischen Mustern. Daneben gibt es die kleinen (ca. 50 × 80 cm), nahezu in allen Te…ilen der islamischen Welt hergestellten und immer gerichteten Gebetsteppiche. Der Orts- oder Landschaftsname des Orientteppichs ist die Herkunftsbezeichnung bzw. Provenienz, die zugleich auch eine Qualitätsbezeichnung ist, da die einzelnen Orte und Gebiete ihre eigene Tradition in Bezug auf Gestaltung und Qualität haben. Orientalische Teppiche werden in Indien, im Iran oder der Türkei angefertigt. Sie kommen aber auch aus dem Kaukasus, aus Pakistan und Afghanistan. Des Weiteren kommen Teppiche heute aus China, Nepal und der Mongolei sowie aus Japan; ebenso sind die sogenannten Berberteppiche der Maghreb-Staaten zu erwähnen. Der orientalische Wirkteppich, genannt auch Bildteppich, ist geschichtlich und technisch der Vorläufer der europäischen Bildwirkerei. Seiner Bedeutung nach dient er als Wandverkleidung, und nur die gewöhnlicheren Arten dienen z. B. als Diwandecken, sogenannte Kelims. Gewirkte Teppiche werden häufig, da sie in einer der Bildwirkerei ähnlichen Technik gefertigt werden, irreführenderweise auch 'gobelinartige Teppiche' genannt. Ihre richtige Bezeichnung ist Wirkteppich. Sie bilden ein glattes Gewebe, dessen Kette aus Leinen- oder Baumwollgarn durch einen dicht angeschlagenen wollenen Schuss vollständig bedeckt wird, so dass ein ripsartiger Stoff entsteht.
