Original figured cloth, gilt, some occasional foxing, repairs to head- and tailcaps, spine slightly faded, frontispiece with light marginal water-stain. [xv], 414, 24ads.pp. London, Smith Elder & Co., Tronson (dates unknown) was a surgeon on H.M.S. Barracouta, which had been sent to Japan in 1854 under the command of Admiral James Stirling, who was British Commander-in-Chief of the East Indies and China station. Tronson describes how the British squadron visited in Nagasaki (in the wake of Commodore Perry's visit) in order to conclude the first treaty with Japan allowing British merchants access to Japanese markets. The expedition also visited Hong Kong and the Chinese coast, encountering pirates at Kuhlan before proceeding north to Kamtschatka and Sachalin. As Britain was at war with Russia in the Crimea they had been ordered to asses Russian naval activity in the area. He describes many of the growing centres of foreign trade in the Far East and also gives an interesting account of Korea which was still closed to foreigners at the time. Cordier, 543. …
