Add to basketMap. Condition: Near Fine. First. Compiled in the Bureau of Topographical Engineers from the latest authorities under the direction of Col. J. J. Abert. Washington 1838 (NAP). Lithographed map, single sheet 18.5" x 23" (map area 18 x 21 in.), right-hand blank margin complete, top edge lightlly tanned, others clean. A near fine e…xample of thisTopographic map by W. I. Stone after M. H. Stansbury, showing the Oregon Territory from Dixon's Entrance off the coast of present-day British Columbia south to the Monterey Peninsula and east of the Rockies to the approximate longitude of present-day Garden City, Kansas and North Platte, Nebraska. One of the earliest printed maps of the Oregon Territory, copied from the southwest quadrant of John Arrowsmith's 1832 map of British North America. Arrowsmith's map was the first to accurately depict the relative positions of the Columbia and Snake rivers. Hood compiled his map in 1838 to illustrate: Report of Mr. Linn, Senate Document No. 470, 25th Congress, 2nd Session, dated June 6, 1838, to Accompany Senate Bill No. 206, to authorize the President to occupy the Oregon Territory, and was later re-issued in other reports. A map of historic significance, making it one of the most desirable maps of the region. Phillips Maps, p. 641; Schwartz and Ehrenberg, p. 260; cf. Graff/Storm 4380, Wagner-Camp 69c, Rosenthal's p. 184.
