Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores how animals are fed for meat, milk, and work, and how these processes produce manure. The author, a respected scientist in the field, delves into the historical practices of feeding animals, highlighting the transition to more scientific methods. The book also examines the composition of various animals and how their diets affect their growth and fat content. Through numerous experiments, the author demonstrates that the amount of food consumed by an animal is more closely related to its non-nitrogenous content than its nitrogenous content. This challenges the prevailing belief that nitrogenous content is the primary determinant of food value. The author's insights have had a significant impact on the understanding of animal nutrition and the feeding practices of farmers. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an in-depth exploration of the Rothamsted Experiments, a series of agricultural investigations conducted over a period of 50 years at Rothamsted, England. Begun in 1843 by Sir John Bennet Lawes and Dr. Joseph Henry Gilbert, these experiments have made significant contributions to our understanding of crop nutrition and soil fertility. The book offers an overview of the experiments, focusing on the findings related to root crops, barley, leguminous crops, wheat, and crop rotation systems. Through the analysis of field experiments, feeding trials, and laboratory investigations, the authors examine the effects of various manures and fertilizers on crop growth and yield. The book highlights the importance of nitrogen fixation in leguminous crops and challenges the prevailing assumption that root crops significantly contribute to nitrogen accumulation in the soil. The findings presented in this book have had a profound impact on agricultural practices and continue to inform our knowledge of sustainable farming methods. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the intricate connection between respiration and severe neurological conditions like apoplexy (stroke) and epilepsy. Written by a renowned physician of the 19th century, the book delves into the then-cutting-edge field of physiology, specifically focusing on the "Diastaltic Nervous System," a concept developed by the author. The bookââ â¢s central argument revolves around the crucial role of laryngismus, or a dysfunction of the larynx, in the progression of these diseases. The author postulates that laryngismus can act as both a consequence of milder forms of apoplexy and epilepsy, and as a catalyst for the onset of more severe attacks. He further argues that the traditional treatments of the time, including bloodletting, were often inadequate in addressing the underlying respiratory issues. The author champions tracheotomy ââ â a surgical procedure to create an opening in the trachea ââ â as a potential remedy for both apoplexy and epilepsy. The book's detailed case studies and vivid descriptions of the physiological processes at play offer a compelling glimpse into the medical practices and theories prevalent in the 19th century. The authorââ â¢s passionate advocacy for tracheotomy as a life-saving and potentially transformative intervention highlights the evolving understanding of the human body and the quest for effective medical solutions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Original 10-1/2-inch quarto recently rebound in half burgundy leather (with gilt titling) over "Dutch marbled" boards. Includes Joseph Lister's (Esq., F.R.S.) three-part paper "On a new method of treating compound fracture, abscess, etc. with observations on the conditions of suppuration," as well as his "On the antiseptic principle in the practice of surgery." As head of the surgical wards at Glasgow's Royal Infirmary and Professor of Surgery in the university of Glasgow, Lister "was appalled by the 40 percent mortality rate among surgery patients, most of it caused by gangrene, erysipelas, septicemia, and other postoperative infections. After studying the problem, he came to believe that wound suppuration was a form of putrefaction and was confirmed in his belief by the writings of Pasteur, who had recently proved that putrefaction was a fermentative process caused by living microorganisms. Lister adopted carbolic acid as a weapon against microorganisms after learning of its efficacy in sewage treatment, and used it in 11 cases of compound fracture, 9 of which recovered. He then applied his antiseptic techniques to the treatment of abscesses with similar success. Lister described his remarkable achievements in this classic series of reports, his first work on the antiseptic principle in surgery." 774 pp., reduced from $8,000.…
