Hand color Lithographs; Large Thick Folio; xvii, (3), 512 pages; One of the important ornithological monographs, this published in a limited edition of only 225 copies; unfortunately, this copy is disbound and lacks the limitation page after the index. Illustrated with 74 hand-coloured… lithographed plates by J. G. Keulemans. The last leaf of the index is missing the lower outside quadrant, text not affected. Though disbound, textblock is still mostly integral with a few initial leaves separating. Plates are in Very Good condition. The Birds of Australia is an important ornithological monograph covering the birds of Australia, comprising 12 volumes in total, sponsored and authored by Australian ornithologist Gregory Mathews, greatly assisted by collaborator Tom Iredale. The series was published by H. F. & G. Witherby of London over a 17-year period from 1910 to 1927. In The Emu, J. A. Leach wrote: "In these twelve splendid volumes, Mr Mathews has stressed largely the nomenclatural aspect, a phase of ornithology which received little attention from John Gould." As well as the extensive scientific text, in which Mathews described several new species and subspecies, the volumes are illustrated with hand-coloured lithographed plates by J. G. Keulemans after drawings by Grà nvold, Keulemans, Lodge and others. In Birds and Bird Art, Jean Anker states: "An enormous amount of information is contained in these volumes, in which the literature concerned and the question of nomenclature are fully treated. Under each genus synonyms, a brief diagnosis, a description, and a key to the species are given, while under each form we find a detailed synomyny, information about distribution and, as far as posssible, a description of the adult male, the adult female, the immature bird, and the nestling; the eggs and the nests are also described, and the breedings-months stated. Then follows an account of the habits and life-history of the birds, including long quotations from the literature". Gregory Macalister Mathews (1876-1949), ornithologist, was born in 1876 at Merrygoen, New South Wales Educated at Singleton Grammar School and The King's School, Parramatta, he enthusiastically collected birds' eggs. He worked for six years on a cattle-station in Queensland, observing birds on droving trips, then returned to New South Wales and became an orchardist. After sailing with his wife to England, Mathews visited the British Museum and conceived the idea of producing an exhaustive work on Australian birds. R. Bowdler Sharpe, keeper of the Museum's bird collection, encouraged him and outlined a prospective work method. Mathews spent sixteen-hour days in research, writing, skin and book-collecting. Over time, Mathews bought, exchanged or obtained by through other collectors 30,000 skins and amassed some 5000 books covering every aspect of ornithology. The first volume of The Birds of Australia was published in London in 1910. Next year Tom Iredale became his secretary; in close partnership they produced a staggering amount of work until Iredale left for Australia in 1923. His collection of skins, sold to Lord Rothschild in the 1920s, is now in the American Museum of Natural History, New York. Very large heavy book; no overseas orders. Illustrated by J. G.
