Kripalani. Kripalani is recognized as a major player in India's history, formerly holding the office of President of the INC during India's transfer of power and independence from Great Britain in 1947. Kripalani is recognized as one of India's preeminent freedom-fighters, Gandhi-Socialists, Gandhi confidant, close friend, disciple and adviser. Upon Gandhi's assassination in January 1948, Kripalani's was stripped of power. Kripalani is portrayed by actor Anang Desai in Richard Attenborough's 1982 critically acclaimed film, Gandhi. In addition to signing the front endpaper, Kripalani also dated his inscription and added his location: JB Kripalani 29.8.79 Madras. Two pages later is a tipped-in presentation card from the Governor's official residence, Raj Bhavan - Madras; located in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu. The presentation card reads: With the best compliments of THIRU PRABHUDAS B. PATWARI - Governor of Tamil Nadu. Patwari was the ever-popular Governor of the south Indian state from 1977-1980, and staunch Gandhian. This specific volume comes form the library of Robert F. Goheen, the 16th President of Princeton University and former U.S. Ambassador to India from 1977-1980; appointed by then President Jimmy Carter. During Goheen's tenure as President of Princeton University, he oversaw the admission of women to the University. Goheen, the child of Presbyterian medical missionaries was born in Vengurla, India and educated there up until the 10th grade at Kodaikanal International School in Tamil Nadu; the same state where he would later be presented with this book from Tamil Nadu's Governor. An incredibly rare, unique offering of the classic biography by Gandhi's friend, in its original uncommon DJ with a rare inscription by JB Kripalani, in addition to an uncommon presentation card from the Governor; and from the library of the former Ambassador to India, and former President of Princeton University. Rare. Signed by Author(s).
