Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a unique glimpse into the exploratory adventures of its author as he traverses the wilderness of Newfoundland in the mid-1800s. Serving as a naturalist and geologist, his observations provide scientific insight into the region's landscape and wildlife during a time when much of it remained uncharted. Beyond expeditions into the island's interior, the author mingles with locals, visiting farms, fishing villages, and more, to provide a detailed portrait of life in this corner of the British Empire. Rich with anecdotes, geological observations, and geographical descriptions, this book captures an intriguing moment in Newfoundland's history and offers a memorable account of the author's experiences and the natural world he encountered. First Edition
2 Volumes. 12mo. pp. x, 322; iv, 354, [2]ads. large folding lithographed map. modern half leather (stain in outer margin of 5 leaves in Vol. I, light foxing to outer leaves). First Edition. The first geological survey of Newfoundland was undertaken by British geologist Joseph Beete Jukes in 1839-40. His task was an arduous one as the interior of the province was virtually unknown and therefore uncharted, except for the single track of William Eppes Cormack's crossing from Trinity Bay to St. George's Bay in 1822. His full geological report first appeared here in his Excursions (Vol. II, pp. [195]-354) and was then published separately the following year, with a map of Newfoundland, 'The Coast Lines compiled from the most recent Admiralty Charts; The Interior filled up partly from a rough personal survey, and partly from oral information'. This map, present here but rarely found in copies of the Excursions, is the first comprehensive map of the interior of Newfoundland. The Excursions provide a valuable record of Newfoundland society as Jukes, during his two year stay on the island, came in close contact with all segments of the population, the cod fisherman, seal hunters, Micmac Indians, &c. Although struck by the coarse and primitive manners of the Newfoundlanders, he was on the whole impressed by their honesty, industry and good nature, and disagreed with most outside observers that the mass of people were habitual drunkards. TPL 5187. Lande 479. Morgan p. 208. Sabin 36877 (the only bibliography to call for a map). O'Dea 478. DCB IX pp. 417-19.
