The Empress was a fortnightly magazine that largely addressed social matters, politics, sports, and dramatic events in India. It was published by Thacker, Spink & Company, a prominent British-Indian publishing house, bookseller, stationer, and printer headquartered in Calcutta. The company played a key role in the colonial-era book trade and cultural dissemination in South Asia from its founding in 1819 until the mid-20th century, and originated as the Calcutta branch of London-based William Thacker & Co., leveraging transcontinental networks to import and distribute European books while catering to British expatriates, Indian elites, and colonial administrators. The issues in this volume are bound in as follows: Vol. XIV, No. 2, Feburary 1900' Vol. XIV, No. 2, September 1900; Vol. XIV, No. 1, October 1900; Vol. XIII, No. 2, October 1900; Vol. XIII, No. 1, November 1899. The book is bound in contemporary dark blueish-purple cloth covered boards with 'The Empress 1900' stamped in gold on the front board. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and staining to the boards. The corners are bumped with some damage and a little loss to the cloth on the corner tips. The spine ends are bumped with damage and some loss to the cloth and there is a 1/2" hole in the cloth near the middle of the spine. The cloth on the rear spine edge has a 2 1/2" split about 4" from the top and there are a few other small splits elsewhere on the edge. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few scattered small marks and stains from finger smudges, etc., mostly on the fore edge or around the bottom corners. Some of the pages have small tears of up to about 1/2" on the edges and there is a larger 1" tear that has been repaired with paper on the fore edge of page 7 of the issue for February 1900 and an unrepaired 1" tear on the fore edge of page 3 of the issue for October 1900. The endpapers have some light foxing but there is no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a large and fairly heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK. …
