John Adolphus Bernard Dahlgren (November 13, 1809 July 12, 1870) was a United States Navy officer who founded his service's Ordnance Department and launched significant advances in gunnery. Dahlgren devised a smoothbore howitzer, adaptable for many sizes of craft and shore installations. He then introduced a cast-iron muzzle-loading cannon with vastly increased range and accuracy, known as the Dahlgren gun, that became the U. S. Navy's standard armament. EB; 134 pages.

Externally, moderate shelf wear, as can be expected from examples of this age, with several tears and chips to edges, more signficant to the front cover of The Forests and Flora of British Honduras, which also features a chip to the spine tail. Light discolouration, spotting and marking to all works, sunning more prominent to Flora of the Lancetilla Valley Honduras and Index of American Palms. Internally, generally firmly bound, fragile front hinges leading to the occasional delicate page. Bright and clean collection with any spotting mainly contained to the first and last few pages. They cover all phases of fighting a ship, including gunnery, gunpowder, shot and shells, station bills, table of allowance, et…c. There are plates of guns and carriages, and also a section on hydrography, with plates (one folding) of hydrographic instruments. This is bound with Dahlgren's important treatise on boat howitzers. See Smith II, 3831 and 3832. Both these titles are scarce, with nothing but reprints available online. Worldcat cites one example of the two titles bound together, but shows no library holdings. Bound in half diced calf over marbled boards.
