Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1932. First edition. xi, 192pp. Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the celebrated headmaster of Rugby School. He was educated at Winchester College and Rugby School, and in 1840 h…e matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford, where in 1841 he won an open scholarship, graduating B.A. in 1844. Arthur Hugh Clough (1819-1861) was an English poet, an educationalist, and a devoted assistant to Florence Nightingale. In 1829 Clough began attending Rugby School, under Thomas Arnold, and in 1837 he won a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford. The two men became close friends at Oxford, although the beginning of the friendship was at Rugby. Following two substantial introductory chapters, this book contains 62 letters from Matthew Arnold to Arthur Clough, including five letters to Mrs Clough following Arthur's death. The book is bound in the original dark blue cloth covered boards with a paper title label on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards together with some bubbling to the cloth on the top and fore edges of both boards. The corners and spine ends are bumped and the spine is slightly faded. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.

II. Facsimile. 'This is one of the most important sources for the works of Guillaume de Machaut, and thanks to the generosity of its owners, James E and Elizabeth J Ferrell, it has gone from being the most secret and enigmatic of the Machaut sources to the most accessible, and is the first to be produced in facsimile. It is a very large manuscript and the introduction and full-size facsimile have been produced in two volumes, introductory study (vol. 1: 232 pp. colour and b/w) and facsimile (vol. 2: 796 pp. Full colour) in a slipcase. The introduction is a multi-author work, with extensive new content and contextual study by Prof Lawrence Earp revealing hitherto unknown information about the provenance of the book in the library of the Duc du Berry together with a comprehensive history of its ownership up to the 20th century. Domenic Leo has provided a detailed discussion of the art-historical aspects of the book, and Carla Shapreau contributed an explosive chapter about the plunder and restitution of the manuscript during WWII. Christopher de Hamel, Fellow Librarian of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge has contributed a preface covering the recent history and present ownership of the book.'.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 137 pages : illustrations, 1 portrait ; 24 cm. In Armenian. Critical Classical Armenian text; with modern Eastern Armenian translation (Classical orthography), and the study of M. Abeghyan on Saint Mesrop and the Armenian alphabet. 'Koryun wrote his book on the instructions of Joseph… the Catholicos. The full title reads like this: "Leave history and let the blessed Saint Mashtots, our translator, die." The fact that there is no mention or allusion to 450-451 in Koryun's book gave the basis for determining the date of the inscription. About the War of Vardanants, and Vasak Syun, whom Yeghishe gives the unequivocal qualification of a traitor, is presented in positive colors. The biography has been preserved in two editions: extensive and brief. It is likely that the extensive one belongs to Koryun's pen, and the brief one is a later, modified version in the VI-IX centuries, made mainly under the influence of Movses Khorenatsi's "History of Armenians". As an author, he participated in the works of Mesrop Mashtots and Sahak Partev as a satellite. In the introduction, Koryun is concerned with the following question: Is it possible to write the behavior of perfect people? The answer is brief. the conduct of perfect men should be written down to serve as an example to posterity.'.
