The novel deals with the period of the Covenanters, featuring their victory at Loudoun Hill and their defeat at Bothwell Bridge, both in June 1679; a final section is set in 1689 at the time of the royalist defeat at Killiekrankie. Rob Roy has a discolored gutter as does Guy Manering which has not affected the inside printed pages. The volume, Quentin Durward , has the previous owner's gift inscription the covers 3/4 of the page and a discolored gutter. A few books have bumped spines. The publication dates are 1893 and 1894.
