Binding is firm. Else a very good- copy. Acquired directly from Columbus, Mississippi folk artist Elayne Goodman although she was all but 18 or 19 at the time of the inscription and years away from initiating her art career. This uncommon 1953 reprint of the scarce 1881 novel by Colonel William Clark Falkner (1825-1889), grandfather of Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner (1897-1962), features a marvelous Introduction by Newsweek magazine literary editor Robert Cantwell in which he reviews the life of Colonel Falkner and the literary and historical background of THE WHITE ROSE OF MEMPHIS as well as the novel's intriguing autobiographical parallels. Colonel Falkner appears as Colonel Sartoris in various novels and short stories by William Faulkner including SARTORIS, THE UNVANQUISHED, THE HAMLET, and ABSALOM! ABSALOM!
