Reprint. xxx, [2], 542 pages. Hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 14.75cm. Lacks dust jacket. Black boards rubbed; two patches of surface peeling at upper front board; spine ends bumped with scuffing and short tear at head; usual dulling to spine's stamping but all still legible. Muted reddish-purple top edge; light toning and some foxing spots to fore-edge and bottom edge. Slight toning and a few foxing spots to endpapers; a few scattered light stains at leaves' fore-edge margins but interior pages overall remain clean. Binding is firm. Else a very good copy. This uncommon 1953 reprint of the scarce 1881 novel by Colonel William Clark Falkner (1825-1889), grandfather of Nobel Prize winner William Faulkner (1897-1962), features a marvelous Introduction by Newsweek magazine literary editor Robert Cantwell in which he reviews the life of Colonel Falkner and the literary and historical background of THE WHITE ROSE OF MEMPHIS as well as the novel's intriguing autobiographical parallels. Colonel Falkner appears as Colonel Sartoris in various novels and short stories by William Faulkner including SARTORIS, THE UNVANQUISHED, THE HAMLET, and ABSALOM! ABSALOM!
