Minor edge wear and a couple of short closed tears affecting top of jacket, slight page browning, not price clipped (18s net), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, jacket still exceptionally bright and unfaded, overall an excellent copy for its age. 319pp. The Yiddish Russian author Solomon Rabinovitch (1859-1916), who assumed the pen name Sholom Aleichem, took his family and fled to New York from the Ukraine in 1905. He soon became known as the 'Jewish Mark Twain' and the musical Fiddler on the Roof, based on his stories about Tevye the Milkman, was the first commercially successful English-language stage production about Jewish life.
