Sie prägen ganze Baulandschaften, Epochen und Stile.Anhand von über fünfhundert Farbfassungen gibt das Buch erstmals einen landesweiten Überblick über die vielfältige Art und Weise, wie das Äußere unserer historischen Bauten farblich gestaltet worden ist. Die Spanne der im Einzelnen beschriebenen und bebilderten Fassaden reicht vom Mittelalter um 800 bis in den Historismus des 19. Jahrhunderts und von der monumentalen Kirche bis zum bescheidenen Stall. Autor: Mane Hering-Mitgau, geboren 1938 in Cottbus (Niederlausitz), lebt in Zürich. Studium der Kunstgeschichte in Göttingen, Berlin und Freiburg / Breisgau.Dissertation über barocke Silberplastik bei Kurt Bauch. Mehrjährige Inventarisation der Kunstdenkmäler bei der Staatlichen Denkmalpflege von Baden-Württemberg. Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Denkmalpflege an der ETH Zürich seit seiner Gründung 1972. Zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen zu kunstgeschichtlichen Fragen der Denkmalpflege. Seit 2003 freischaffend tätig. Mit "Farbige Fassaden" hatte ich ein ungewöhnliches Sachbuch in der Hand - ungewöhnlich deshalb, weil ich typischerweise wenig mit historischer Architektur und ihren Details zu tun habe (als neugieriger Gucker vielleicht) und das Buch als Grundlage für einen Zeitungsartikel erhielt. Ich muss im Nachhinein sagen, dass sich hinter dem so unscheinbar wirkenden Begriff "Farbige Fassaden" sehr viel mehr verbirgt, als ich angenommen hatte. Mane Hering-Mitgau reist immer wieder durch die Schweiz und sammelt mit der Kamera Eindrücke von den zahlreichen Variationen der Fassadengestaltung. Mal einfach Ritzungen im feuchten Putz, mal klare oder verschnörkelte Fenstereinfassungen oder Embleme, mal Dekorationen von Hausecken durch Malerei, den Einsatz anderer Steine oder durch Steinimitationen. Am beeindruckendsten geraten freilich die Kirchtürme besonders im Tessin oder in Graubünden, die in den Tälern oft weithin für einen Blickfang sorgen. Jedes Beispiel wird mit den verfügbaren Fakten unterfüttert, wie Bauzeit, Gebäudegeschichte, technische Ausführung der Gestaltung oder Angaben zu Restaurationen. Das Titelbild stammt von den Eckquadern des Gemeindehauses in Botyre-Ayens (Wallis), die inzwischen restauriert worden sind. Hering-Mitgau spart auch nicht mit Kritik, lobt manch gelungene Neugestaltung und kommentiert andere als "bedauerlich", "frei erfunden" und "ahistorisch". Wer sich mit dem Thema farbiger Fassaden auseinandersetzen möchte, findet gleich nach dem Inhaltsverzeichnis eine Einleitung, in der die Aufteilung erläutert wird. Denn wie strukturiert man all die Beispiele? Hering-Mitgau macht dies zunächst nach Fassadenflächen, Gebäudekanten und Wandauflagen, bevor sie dann erst diese drei Kategorien weiter nach Dekorationstypen unterteilt. Im ausführlichen Anhang findet man sich dann schnell zurecht bei der Sortierung nach Orten und Künstlern sowie einem Verzeichnis der Bauwerke in der Reihenfolge ihrer Nennung und der Zuordnung zu den jeweiligen Kapiteln und Abschnitten. Hinzu kommt ein Literaturverzeichnis. Die vergleichsweise hohe Wertung für das Buch mache ich, weil ich Spaß am Blättern hatte, fasziniert war von den Dekorationen, an denen man sonst so schnell vorbeigeht und weil ich vor allem glaube, dass das Buch mit seiner Aufmachung und seinem Aufbau für Fachleute und Interessierte tatsächlich ein prächtiges und umfassendes Kompendium über die schweizer Baukultur ist. Auf fast 600 Buchseiten zeigt sich, wie vielfältig das Thema ist. Ich werde künftig vermutlich daran zu erkennen sein, dass ich in der Stadt nicht nach den Schaufensterauslagen schiele, sondern immer wieder die Fassaden alter Häuser begutachte, ob sich nicht ein Kleinod irgendwo verbirgt. Dieses Buch deckt einen Bereich in der Schweizer Baugeschichte ab, der bisher praktisch so nicht existierte. Mit Unterstützung durch die ETH-Zürich und verschiedener Sponsoren ist ein umfangreiches und kompetentes Werk über die typischen Aussenfarbigkeiten an Gebäuden in der ganzen Schweiz entstanden. Es spricht vor allem Architekten und Baufachpersonen an, ist aber auch hervorragend als Geschenk für kulturinteressierte Laien geeignet. Leider sind inzwischen viele der gezeigten Beispiele nicht mehr vorhanden oder durch wilde Renovierungen verändert worden.
