Paperback. Condition: Very Good. "The Hand-Sculpted House inspired me to learn and do more and transformed how I saw homes and building in general."Mother Earth News "If you follow it word for word you will build yourself a house no matter who you are."Builder Paul Dillon, quoted in The Irish Times Are you ready for the Cob Cott…age? This is a building method so old and so simple that it has been all but forgotten in the rush to synthetics. A cob cottage, however, might be the ultimate expression of ecological design, a structure so attuned to its surroundings that its creators refer to it as an ecstatic house. The authors build a house the way others create a natural garden. They use the oldest, most available materials imaginableearth, clay, sand, straw, and waterand blend them to redefine the future (and past) of building. Cob (the word comes from an Old English root, meaning lump) is a mixture of non-toxic, recyclable, and often free materials. Building with cob requires no forms, no cement, and no machinery of any kind. Builders actually sculpt their structures by hand. Building with earth is nothing new to America; the oldest structures on the continent were built with adobe bricks. Adobe, however, has been geographically limited to the Southwest. The limits of cob are defined only by the builders imagination. Cob offers answers regarding our role in Nature, family and society, about why we feel the ways that we do, about whats missing in our lives. Cob comes as a revelation, a key to a saner world. Cob has been a traditional building process for millennia in Europe, even in rainy and windy climates like the British Isles, where many cob buildings still serve as family homes after hundreds of years. Cob houses (or cottages, since they are always efficiently small by American construction standards) are not only compatible with their surroundings, they ARE their surroundings, literally rising up from the earth. They are full of light, energy-efficient, and cozy, with curved walls and built-in, whimsical touches. They are delightful. They are ecstatic. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Deanne Bednar (illustrator).

Paperback. Condition: Good. Volunteers in Asia, Published 1979. Paperback, 96 pp.; 23 cm; second printing (October 1979, 3000 copies); illustrated with line drawings by the author and black-and-white photographs; cover graphic by Greg Shaw. In Good condition. Rust-brick illustrated paper covers show mild to moderate wear, with b…umping to edges and corners, color loss along edges, and fading toward spine. Small nick at bottom edge of rear cover, light surface scratches at upper left. Perfect bound and tight. Foxing, soiling, and toning to block edges; pages mildly toned with occasional spotting, otherwise unmarked. Laid in is an original Volunteers in Asia promotional sheet on blue stock, folded once and printed both sides: one side "The Lorena Cookstove, a low-cost alternative in the fight against deforestation," which announces this manual as being prepared for distribution in late 1978; the other "Appropriate Technology Publications, Sept. 1979," listing the Appropriate Technology Sourcebook Volumes I and II, The Arusha Windmill, Appropriate Technology: Problems and Promises, and Where There Is No Doctor. First construction manual for the Lorena stove, a massive sand-and-clay cookstove developed by Ianto Evans at Estacion Experimental Choqui in highland Guatemala in 1976-77 and published at the height of concern over Third World firewood scarcity. Introductory Note by Erik Eckholm, Foreword by Ken Darrow. Covers soil selection, mixing and carving the lorena, dampers, chimney, cooking, and sample designs, with an appendix on rice hulls as fuel and a postscript assessing the stove's diffusion in Guatemala. The Lorena became the most widely disseminated improved-cookstove design of the appropriate technology movement, then was overturned by its own developers: testing at Aprovecho in 1989 found it consumed roughly three times the fuel of a carefully tended open fire, a result the organization credits with driving its turn to the rocket stove. Evans went on to found the Cob Cottage Company and co-author The Hand-Sculpted House and Rocket Mass Heaters. The 1981 successor edition adds Michael Boutette as co-author.
