These volumes collect many of the writings of English mathematician and surveyor Charles Hutton, who was a prolific writer of scientific articles on a variety of subjects, mostly relating to applied mathematics. "Hutton was an indefatigable worker and his mathematical contributions, if unoriginal, were useful and practical. Throughout his life, he contributed assiduously to scientific periodicals through notes, problems, criticism, and commentary. He wrote textbooks for his pupils in Newcastle and the cadets at Woolwich; edited a great many almanacs, including the Ladies' Diary (1773-1818); and compiled several volumes of mathematical tables." â" DSB. Charles Hutton was a leading mathematician at the end of the 18th century whose calculations were highly regarded especially his study on the theory of bridges. This is Volume I of a set that was to include his work on gunpowder. The Dictionary of National Biography notes: "the entries on engineering are particularly valuable". Bound in 3/4 calf over paper covered boards, flat spine with lettering and rules in gilt, corners worn, light damp stain to upper edge of frontispiece does not affect the engraving, text is very clean. A very good copy.

From the Preface: ".In short, the alterations, additions and other improvements are so numerous, and so large, as entitle the present edition to be considered almost as an entire new work"; d.
