Name of Esther Shoot Dudley in pencil on fep…. James Newton Matthews (May 27, 1852 - March 7, 1910) was a physician and poet. In 1887, James Whitcomb Riley wrote to Matthews: It is a natural law that men shall love women, but I love you, and no knife shall cut our love in two! At sixteen, Matthews was the very first student to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign when it opened in 1868. Matthews studied literature and medicine before graduating with honors in 1872. Matthews worked as a country doctor and published multiple volumes of poetry for which he became known as the Poet of the Prairie. In 1910, Matthews died of a heart attack after walking more than five miles through a snowstorm to treat a patient. He is buried at Mason Union Cemetery. Today there is a scholarship in his name at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This work includes an appreciation by Walter Hunt. James Witcomb Riley wrote of James Newtom Matthews: Bard of our Western world! Its prairies wide, With edging woods, lost creeks and hidden ways; Its isolated farms, with roundelays Of orchard warblers heard on every side; Its cross-road school-house, wherein still abide Thy fondest memories, since there thy gaze First fell on classic verse; and thou, in praise Of that, didst And thine own song glorified. So singing, smite the strings and counterchange The lucently melodious drippings of Thy happy harp, from airs of "Tempe Vale," To chirp and trill of lowliest flight and range, In praise of our To-day and home and love - Thou meadow-lark no less than nightingale. James Whitcomb Riley. Dr. G. B. Dudley was one of the top medical doctor in Charleston. He opened his medical office on Sixth Street, in the first block south of the square on the east side one year after his marriage to Esther Wilhoit Shoot on July 27, 1905. Their personal background and their involvement with community groups made them Charleston's prominent citizens. Dr. Dudley served on the Board of of Education, as Commander of the American Legion, as Trustee for the Methodist Church and as a member of the Masonic Lodge. Mrs. Dudley was involved with the Sally Lincoln Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Charleston Panhellic, the Illinois Branch of the Sons and Daughters of Pilgrims, the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and the Methodist Church. Dr. Dudley passed away in 1958. Mrs. Esther Wilhoit Shoot Dudley passed away on July 1, 1960. The house was then inherited by Tilford Eli Dudley, the oldest child of the Dudleys'. Tilford Dudley gave the house to the Coles County Historical Society on September 15, 1982. He also established the Gerry Brown Dudley award at Eastern Illinois University.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complexities of race antagonism, with a particular focus on the Jewish experience. It argues that such conflicts are not rooted in religious or cultural differences, but rather stem from economic competition and anxieties. The author contends that throughout h…istory, groups have resorted to prejudice and persecution to maintain economic dominance, often using religious justifications as a smokescreen. This exploration of the Jewish problem extends beyond historical analysis to offer a philosophical perspective. The author suggests that the Jewish people's enduring presence and remarkable achievements are indicative of a larger mission ââ â to promote universal brotherhood and social justice. Despite facing centuries of adversity, the Jewish community's resilience and commitment to ethical principles are presented as vital ingredients for a more harmonious and equitable world. The book challenges conventional notions of patriotism and nationalism, exposing their role in perpetuating division and conflict. It advocates for a shift towards a global perspective, where individuals are judged by their character rather than their origin. By understanding the economic underpinnings of prejudice, the author believes we can work towards dismantling harmful stereotypes and embracing the richness of diversity. Ultimately, this book offers a compelling case for recognizing the Jewish people's contributions to humanity and embracing their ideals as a pathway to a more just and peaceful future. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
