Carl Van Vechten's "A Chat About Chinese Food and a Chinese Cook" (pp. xv-xix) describes his long association with Lin Tsuifeng, her husband Lin Yutang, and their children, including their youngest daughter, Lin Hsiangju (also known as Mei-Mei). "It is indubitably true that cooking and eating come very near the top of my special addictions. If you have never eaten one of Hong's [Lin Tsuifeng's] delicious dinners (and how could you have?), you scarcely know the meaning of Chinese food, certainly not its deeper subtleties. Mei-Mei is a young lady who mixes an excellent cocktail (but does not drink it) when her mother gives a dinner" (pp. xv-xviii).
