A journal kept by Anna Mary Howitt (later Watts) while an art student in Munich from 1850 to 1852. Desc among others of Oberammergau and Octoberfest; The diary of the first nine months of an art student's life in the studio of the German painter Wilhelm Von Kaulbach in 1850 and 1851. wiki=Wilhelm von Kaulbach (15 October 1805 in Bad Arolsen, Waldeck 7 April 1874) was a German painter, noted mainly as a muralist, but also as a book illustrator. His murals decorate buildings in Munich. He was a student in the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, to which the sculptor Rauch had obtained him admission. The academy was then becoming renowned under the directorship of Peter von Cornelius. The ambitious work by which Ludwig I of Bavaria sought to transform Munich into a German Athens afforded the young painter an appropriate sphere. Cornelius had been commissioned to execute the enormous frescoes in the Glyptothek, and his custom was in the winters, with the aid of Kaulbach and others, to complete the cartoons at Düsseldorf, and in the summers, accompanied by his best pupils, to carry out the designs in colour on the museum walls in Munich. In 1824 Cornelius became director of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Kaulbach, not yet twenty, followed, took up his permanent residence in Munich, worked hard on the public works, executed independent commissions, and in 1849, when Cornelius left for Berlin, succeeded to the directorship of the academy, an office which he held till his death.Howitt was also author of The Pioneers of the Spiritual Reformation: Life and Works of Dr. Justinus Kerner Adapted From the German; William Howitt and His Work for Spiritualism [1883].

"Heads of the People - or, Portraits of the English" with Original Essays by Distinguished Writers (including Mrs. Gore, Nimrod, Douglas Jerrold, C. Whitehead, Mrs. S.C. Hall, Leigh Hunt, William Howitt, William Thackeray, and Paul Prendergast). 1841 1st American edit…ion; Carey & Hart; Philadelphia. The book features an illustrated title page with frontispiece, as well as numerous full-page engravings by Kenny Meadows. There is a 16-page publisher's catalog at the front, which includes reviews for this book by various publications. The contents are as follows: Debtor and Creditor; The Cockney; The Diner-Out; The Fashionable Authoress; The "Lion" of a Party; The Young Lord; The Young Squire; The Waiter; The Dress-Maker; The Coachman and the Guard; The Linen-Draper's Assistant; The Chaperon and the Debutante; The Collegian; The Conductor; Tavern Heads; The Basket-Woman; Captain Rook and Mr. Pigeon; The Sporting Gentleman; The Farmer's Daughter; The Family Governess; The Stock-Broker; The Printer's Devil; The Bricklayer's Laborer. From a review by 'The Atlas': "By the title, the "Heads of the People,' the projector mean a series of portraits of different grades and occupations - showing aristocratic life familiarly to the humble, and developing those strange passages in the warfare of the inferior ranks with fortune, which are utterly unknown a little higher up in the scale. Each character, or class, is described in a pleasant, stinging paper, and illustrated by a clever embellishment. The descriptions are lively, satirical, and true to life; and the engravings are highly graphic and humourous. The design is good, and capable of a rich harvest of entertainment." Condition: There is a light, horizontal stain across the bottom half of the front cover; light staining on the spine; clean back cover. Tiny cloth tears at 3 of the corner tips. 1/2" cloth tear at the top-left corner of the spine. Tight binding with no cracks. There is a small cluster of pages near the front (pages 47-54) that have pulled from the top 2 strings and the bottom 2 strings, but are still attached at the center 2 strings. Another small cluster (pages 82-87) has pulled from the top 2 strings. Consistent mild foxing to the pages (though heavier on the front and rear pastedowns, and to a few random text pages). Overall the book is in Good condition.

Add to basketFirst edition. 12 pages of preliminaries, then 228 pages and 15 illustrated plates (7 black and white, 8 in colour), seemingly lacking one of the black and white plates based on comparison with other copies. The book is bound in the publisher's pebbled blue cloth covered boards, lettered and decorated in gilt and blind, the boar…ds are quite marked and rubbed, the cloth is split along the rear hinge, there is a small piece missing to the top of the spine, the extremities are bumped, with other small tears to the cloth. The text block is slightly toned, marked and foxed, with some dog-eared page corners, the contents page is detached, as is one of the plates, with consequent small tears and damage to their edges, one of the plates has lost its tissue guard, and page H4's top corner has been torn off without loss of text. A notable early British treatise on the supernatural phenomena associated with spiritualism, particularly important for the inclusion of some of the earliest reproductions of spirit drawings, including those by Mary Anne Howitt. Rare in commerce and not overly well represented in institutional holdings. This example in fragile condition and probably requiring intervention by a conservator or bookbinder in the near future.
