The Revival of Caslon Types Justin Howes Limited Edition by Woodbank Press Originally published in 2013, The Revival of Caslon Types brings together three important essays by Justin Howes devoted to the history and revival of William Caslon's typefaces. First printed in Matrix: The Review for Printers…& Bibliophiles, these studies remain among the most authoritative modern accounts of one of the most influential figures in the history of British typography. William Caslon (1692-1766) transformed the appearance of English printing during the eighteenth century. His roman types became the defining letterforms of the Georgian book, shaping the visual language of the Enlightenment and remaining in continuous use for generations. Justin Howes (1963-2005), widely regarded as one of the foremost scholars of British typography, devoted much of his career to documenting Caslon's work and its lasting influence on printing and type design. The volume includes an introduction by John Randle of Whittington Press and an afterword by Nicolas Barker, the distinguished bibliographer and long-serving editor of The Book Collector, placing Howes's essays within the wider tradition of British fine printing and bibliographical scholarship. The Woodbank Press Edition First published by Rambler Press in 2013 and now issued under the Woodbank Press imprint, this edition marks the beginning of the publishing tradition from which Woodbank Press developed. It was the first limited edition produced by the press and established the typographic and design principles that continue to shape its publications today. Published in a limited edition of 75 numbered copies, this octavo volume is set in Caslon, the typeface whose history forms the subject of the book. The volume is printed on Fabriano Tiepolo, an Italian mould-made pure cotton paper admired for its warm tone, tactile surface and exceptional permanence. Each copy is hand bound in leather with printed paper-covered boards. The edition has been designed in the classical European tradition, with particular attention given to typography, proportion and craftsmanship. Produced in a limitation of only seventy-five copies, the edition is intended to be read, collected and preserved. Bibliographical Details Title: The Revival of Caslon Types Author: Justin Howes Publisher: Woodbank Press (first published by Rambler Press) Place of Publication: Warsaw Year: 2013 Edition: Limited to 75 numbered copies Format: Octavo Pagination: 112 pages Typeface: Caslon Paper: Fabriano Tiepolo mould-made pure cotton paper Binding: Hand bound in leather with printed paper-covered boards Condition: New Language: English About Woodbank Press Woodbank Press is an independent press based in Warsaw, Poland, devoted to publishing limited editions of classic literature, typography and book history. Every title is issued in an edition of no more than 25 numbered copies, with particular attention given to typography, page design, paper and hand binding. Rather than reproducing historic books, the press creates original editions inspired by the traditions of the European private press. Each volume is conceived as a carefully made book, intended to unite literary heritage with enduring standards of typography, craftsmanship and design.
