Story of the discovery of the Oregon Trail, main overland route connecting the Missouri River to the Oregon Country, which came to light with the 1930s recovery of journals kept by Robert Stuart (1785-1848). Stuart's detailed records narrate the trip eastward from Fort Astoria to St. Louis in the winter months of 1812 - 1813. It is said that Washington Irving's (1783 -1859) Astoria (1836) drew from this journal. Scholarly historical study.
