This pamphlet contains a transcription of a journal kept by Stephen H. Long, Colonel of the Topographical Engineers of the United States Army, during his voyage aboard a six-oared skiff in 1817. During his journey, Long explored the Upper Mississippi River and surrounding areas. The mission of Long's expedition was to survey the Upper Mississippi and the topography of its shores for military purposes. Long's account also includes the legends of Maiden Rock and the Falls of Saint Anthony and documents the Indigenous villages that used to reside in the region where Long had explored. Long's journal is written chronologically by day and provides detailed descriptions about his observations and experiences on the journey. Among the many subjects he writes about are catching fish, interacting with Indigenous Peoples such as the Winnebago and Sioux, the changing weather, collecting rock specimens, picturesque bluffs and other geological formations, witnessing a Bear Dance, the Indigenous legend of Lover' Leap, Lake Pepin, visiting Carver's Cave and Fountain Cave, observing Painted Rock and its Indigenous hieroglyphics, Fort Crawford, the village of Prairie du Chien, background information about the "Dog Indians" from which "Prairie du Chien" ("Prairie of the Dog") is derived, Fort Armstrong, and Fort Edwards.
