As can be imagined, although there were a large number of copies printed, relatively few have survived the ravages of combat, the other ravages of time, the ephemeral nature of these softcover wartime editions, and both intentional and inadvertent destruction. This 'fair condition' copy has literally been through the wars. It's survival over nearly eight decades rivals, in some ways, the survival through the oral tradition of the Odyssey of Homer until such time as it's majestic words could be captured in written form. Not only is this work of inestimable value to the serious Lawrence of Arabia collector, but it is equally significant to the classical scholar and those who appreciate a rowdy good tale. Edith Hamilton, whose reputation as a scholar of the ancient Greeks has no equal, wrote: Homer's poetry turned to prose. "I did not know that it was possible for a translation to reproduce so closely the beauty and delightfulness of Homer. I feel that Colonel Lawrence (T.E. Lawrence's Odyssey was a masterpiece, an aesthetically magnificent book and a highly regarded translation. This is the… first, limited, and finely bound edition, in near fine condition, housed in a black cloth slipcase.The binding is clean, unfaded, square, and tight, with only mild, superficial scuffs and blemishes. The contents are lovely, clean and bright with no previous owner names. We note only a hint of trivial spotting which appears confined to the endpapers. The gilt top edge remains bight, with minor scuffs. The untrimmed fore and bottom edges are notably clean. The accompanying slipcase is stout, covered in black cloth and lined with black paper. Condition of the slipcase is near fine, with minor shelf scuffs and blemishes. T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935) achieved fame from his remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." However, Lawrence's literary and intellectual reach far exceeded the world and words ofSeven Pillars of Wisdom.To the point, Lawrence's friend and admirer Winston Churchill said:"Lawrence had a full measure of the versatility of geniusHe was a savant as well as a soldier.He was an archaeologist as well as a man of action.He was an accomplished scholar as well as an Arab partisan.He was a mechanic as well as a philosopher." Bruce Rogers (1870-1957) was one of the most distinguished typographers and book designers of his time. "Inspired by reading Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Bruce Rogers persuaded Lawrence to undertake a new translation of The Odyssey. Begun in 1928 and published in 1932, the translation was undertaken during Lawrence's free time while serving in the ranks. It was published in a beautiful edition of 530 copies by Emery Walker, Wilfred Merton, and Bruce Rogers." Lawrence's and Rogers' Odyssey was one of the last major works printed by Emery Walker Ltd while he was still actively involved in the company. In 1888, the year of Lawrence's birth, it was Walker who inspired William Morris to found the Kelmscott Press. Morris in turn had inspired both Lawrence and Bruce Rogers to become interested in fine printing. In a sense, their magnificent 1932 Odyssey brought the story full circle. For Lawrence, Rogers, and Walker were living legends.The edition is unpretentiously beautiful, bound in unadorned full black Niger Morocco and printed on grey, handmade, watermarked paper with gilt top edge and untrimmed fore and bottom edges. The text contains 26 roundels printed in black on gold leaf at the head of each book and title page, which were commissioned and designed by Bruce Rogers. In "Bruce Rogers. A Life in Letters, " Joseph Blumenthal describes this volume; "I believe the Bruce Rogers Odyssey is indisputably amongst the most beautiful books ever produced. It is difficult to describe a work of genius. In The Odyssey without tricks or accessory decoration, with a classic austerity akin to the timeless proportions of the Parthenon, with only type and paper and ink, with consummate skill, Rogers created a masterpiece". Lawrence was not a classicist, but he was unequivocally brilliant. Moreover, Lawrence's bonafides were perhaps singular among the many Odyssey translators: "I have hunted wild boars and watched wild lions. Built boats and killed many men. So I have odd knowledges that qualify me to understand the Odyssey, and odd experiences that interpret it to me." The result is a translation regarded as vivid, idiosyncratic, and more endowed with personality than fidelity which perhaps explains its enduring appeal. His official biographer, Jeremy Wilson, wrote in 2014 "Lawrence's translation has been continuously in print for more than 80 years.

Shaw (Lawrence of Arabia) bound in full calf by Riviere. The book was designed by the noted book designer Bruce Rogers. The second item is The Letters from T.… E. Shaw to Bruce Rogers, this is one of 200 copies privately printed in 1933. It is signed and inscribed by Bruce Rogers to Sydney C Cockerell. Sir Sydney was the director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and was knighted in 1934. The Fitzwilliam is the Art & Antiquities Museum of Cambridge and Cockerell was there from 1908 to 1937 building up their collection of private press books, manuscripts, prints, drawings, and paintings. The third item is More Letters from T. E. Shaw to Bruce Rogers and is one of 300 copies privately printed in 1936. It is also signed and inscribed by Rogers to Cockerell. Letters and More Letters are bound in flexible cloth covered boards and come in a shared slipcase. Letters and More Letters contain Lawrence's thoughts and opinions about The Odyssey project and the friendship between Lawrence and Rogers. The Odyssey is bound in full tree calf by Riviere with marbled endpapers, gilded page edges, decorative borders, and red and green spine labels. It has a previous owner gift inscription on the first free endpaper dated Christmas, 1933. The front pastedown has the bookplate of John R Payne - retired professor at the University of Texas at Austin, T. E. Lawrence specialist, and perhaps the best rare book appraiser in Texas during his career. Very light wear to spine, otherwise Fine. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 327 pages.

This copy is not only still housed in its original slipcase and accompanied by the original publisher's prospectus, but also inscribed by the printer, Sir Emery Walker, to musical prodigy and d…ecidedly unconventional prominent cultural figure Violet Gordon Woodhouse. The inscription is inked in six lines in Walker's unsteady hand on the upper right recto of the blank preceding the title page: "to Violet Gordon Woodhouse | from her affectionate friend | Emery Walker; for her birth-Day | April 23.1933; and in remem- | brance of April 14." Violet was turning 62 years old. Emery, already 82, would not see another birthday; he inscribed this book just three months before his death.The book approaches near fine condition. The binding is square, clean and unfaded, with sharp corners. Minor scuffs are primarily confined to the hinge extremities and corners. The contents are lovely, clean and bright with no spotting or soiling. We note only perimeter browning to the endpapers from contact with the turn-ins. The gilt top edge remains bright except for some dulling immediately adjacent to the spine. The untrimmed fore and bottom edges look immaculate.Laid in is the original publisher's prospectus, an elusive and collectible item on its own. The prospectus is clean and complete, with a single horizontal fold. The publisher's original slipcase, in plain black paper-covered card, is intact, though significantly scuffed. The book was purchased a quarter of a century ago from the venerable London firm of Maggs Bros. Ltd. and we will include their sales receipt.In 1932, T. E. Distinguished printing historian and fine-press printer Joseph Blumenthal said "I believe that the Bruce Rogers Odyssey is indisputably among the most beautiful books ever produced."Rogers designed the book and Lawrence provided the translation. It owes its physical existence to the printer, Sir Emery Walker (1851-1933). "Emery Walker, friend of William Morris and co-proprietor of the Doves Press, had been one of the outstanding printers of the private press movement. Now in his last years, he continued to help Wilfred Merton, his successor at Emery Walker Ltd, until his health failed. The Bruce Rogers Odyssey was his final major achievement, and by no means the least."Rogers and Lawrence sought Walker intentionally, with a clear sense of both the significance of their collaboration and the suitability of Walker's participation. Lawrence "of Arabia" published a translation of Homer's The Odyssey designed by celebrated American typographer and type…designer Bruce Rogers (1870-1957). Bibliophiles know that the finely-bound British first edition of Lawrence's Odyssey of which there were 500 copies was a masterpiece, an aesthetically magnificent book and a highly regarded translation. Less known but extravagantly scarcer is this first limited American edition of 1932, limited to 34 hand-numbered copies, of which only 25 were for sale. Hence the commercially available number of U.S. first and limited editions for sale was just 5% of those available for its British counterpart. And it appears that despite being incredibly few in number, these 25 varied considerably in appearance. Duval reports "23 copies bound in full calf; 11 copies in full crushed morocco." O'Brien reports one of the first 11 in full blue Morocco, with "blue and white head and tail bands" but also notes a binding that is "brown" with top edges gilt and "gold and red head and tail bands." Neither bibliographer noted a dust jacket. The contents of all 34 copies were printed on white, laid, watermarked paper with untrimmed fore and bottom edges, trimmed and gilt top edges, and bound with head and tail bands.We are aware of a copy among the first 11 in full blue Morocco goatskin, corroborating Duval and O'Brien. However, we are aware of three binding variants of the 25 offered for sale in, respectively, brown, red, and a distinctive dark orange all bound by the publisher in what one of our colleagues has noted as "an attractive and rather unusual class of leather", this having the soft, smooth feel of calf, but nonetheless featuring a distinct, tactile grain pattern.Our copy hand-numbered "15" on the limitation statement is the handsome dark orange binding featuring red and gold head and tail bands and, remarkably, still protected beneath the publisher-issued undecorated laid paper dust jacket. This is one of only two jacketed copies known to us, and the better of the two. Condition is near fine. The binding is square and tight, the leather supple and unfaded, the corners sharp. We note only light wear to the spine bands, and minor shelf wear to the extremities. This is remarkable given the softness of the leather and doubtless attributable to lifelong protection beneath the dust jacket. The contents are beautifully clean, with no spotting or previous ownership marks. The top edge gilt remains bright. The dust jacket is pardonably age-toned and brittle, but nonetheless substantially complete, with small, shallow chip losses confined to the spine ends and edges. The jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover.Of Lawrence's translation, it has been observed that ".when we set his translation against others, two qualities. give it a special distinction. The first is that he enjoys the story for its own sake and spares nothing to keep it clear and lively, to make the details illuminate and strengthen the whole effect. The second is that he sees the whole Homeric world with a clear vision as Homer himself saw it." (Introduction by Sir Maurice Bowra to the 1955 edition of Lawrence's Odyssey) "Although Lawrence translated the Odyssey long after he completed Seven Pillars, Homer's vision plays a major role in the character of Lawrence as we see him in his book, and influences the view that Lawrence as author takes of his characters. The book was printed at the works of Emery Walker, Ltd., under the supervision of Bruce Rogers. Walker and Rogers were two of the most influential figures in the world of books, design, and print…ing in the late 19th and early 20th century. Emery Walker (1851-1933) was an English engraver, photographer and printer. Walker took an active role in many organizations that were at the heart of the Arts and Crafts movement, including the Art Workers Guild, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. He also was a key figure in the world of design, typography and printing, in the teaching and dissemination of those crafts, and in the cultural landscape of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Britain. Bruce Rogers (1870 - 1957) was an American typographer and type designer, acclaimed by some as among the greatest book designers of the twentieth century. Rogers was known for his "allusive" typography, rejecting modernism, seldom using asymmetrical arrangements, rarely using sans serif type faces, often favoring faces such as Bell (at the time known only as Brimmer), Caslon, his own Montaigne, a Jensonian precursor to his masterpiece of type design Centaur. His books can fetch high sums at auction. [Wikipedia] In his book, "Paragraphs on Printing" on pages 148-160, Rogers recounted the four year creation of the Odyssey, from his asking Lawrence to translate the work, to creating the perfect paper and making ink, and the special gold and seven-step printing operation of the rondels. It was widely recognized that Rogers had created a masterpiece (see Blumenthal, Art of the Printed Book). Rogers had been inspired by his reading of "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" to persuade Lawrence to undertake this new translation. Lawrence began his work in 1928, and after some years produced a translation of the classic using his personal experience in the fog of war as well as faithfulness to the text as his guidelines. Bound in full black Niger morocco with gilt toes and lettering on the spine in gold. Printed on special paper made by J. Barcham Greem & Son in 16-point Monotype Centaur. There are 26 decorations of Homeric figures from Greek vase-paintings that are printed in black on roundels of gold leaf that at the head of each Book and on the title page. There is a two inch long ink line on the front free endpaper and the usual discoloration from the leather turns. Otherwise a fine copy. Accompanied by the prospectus. Not in original slipcase. Now housed in a very good fleece lined black clamshell box with a leather spine and black cloth covers. With a bit of scuffing and signs of handling. With an unusual Velcro closure.
