paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that… encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Contact seller4-star sellerFirst Edition. Edinburgh: William Creech, 1777. First edition. First Edition of an Uncommon Study by Lord Kames [Kames, Henry Home, Lord (1696-1782)]. Elucidations Respecting the Common and Statute Law of Scotland. Edinburgh: Printed for William Creech, 1777. First edition. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5-1/4"; 21 cm x 13 cm). xvi, 421, [2]…pp. Includes two-page publisher list of other titles by Kames. Period-style quarter calf over black cloth, raised bands, gilt lettering piece and blind ornaments to spine. Renewed endpapers. Light browning to text, minor edgewear and light soiling to endleaves. Signature to front endleaf " L. Poulson Dobson/ 1858". Small early owner initials "JGC", to head of title page. A handsome copy. $950. * The final major legal treatise written by Henry Home, Lord Kames, a preeminent Scottish jurist and a central intellectual force of the Scottish Enlightenment. Rather than operating as a passive restatement of active Scottish legislation, the text is structured as a philosophical critique of legal methodology, expressly designed to demonstrate forms of legal reasoning free from the shackles of absolute authority. Kames utilized this work to argue for what the common and statute law ought to be, applying the empirical and rationalist principles of his era to systemic jurisprudence. His innovative legal and social theories deeply influenced his contemporaries, including David Hume, James Boswell, and Adam Smith. This first edition remains an uncommon monument of eighteenth-century legal philosophy, with only one subsequent edition published posthumously in 1800. English Short-Title Catalogue T32628. Edinburgh: William Creech, 1777. First edition. (illustrator).
