Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Issued Without Dust Jacket. First Thus. Reprint of the 1840 edition. Both volumes are in fine condition. Text block tight and completed. Likely never read. The infamous "Kentucky Tragedy" involved prominent attorney Jereboam Beauchamp, whose wife, the former Ann Cook, had been s…exually violated some years earlier by Kentucky Attorney-General, Colonel Solomon Sharp. Upon his wife's ultimatum, Beauchamp avenged her dishonor by brutally murdering Sharp, for which he was found guilty and sentenced to death. On the fateful morning, Ann, who had been permitted to share her husband's cell until the execution, proposed a double-suicide—he successfully assisted her and stabbed himself. He survived, however, to be hanged the following day. Hoffman based his Greyslaer on this unfortunate affair. This is the American edition, published just a few days after the English.

Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, ix, 440 pp, ills. A valuable study of 20th century "little magazines" - literary magazines produced to publish artistic work primarily for the sake of publication rather than with a view to profit. Includes much information on a large number of such publications, the genre having undergone a renaissance just b…efore the First World War, with many contributors to such magazines going on to establish important literary reputations. From the blurb: "The history of the little magazine is a fascinating one. a story of ideas, of experiments in style and of personalities. Mr. Hoffman and Mr. Allen have devoted the first half of the book to defining the little magazine and evaluating its contribution to modern social and literary history. Not only do they trace the course of the most brilliant or bizarre - Poetry, The Little Review, Broom. Poetry in Transition, The Dial, to name but a few - but they also emphasize certain important tendencies which these illustrate. " The second half of the book is devoted to the bibliography. Covers rubbed and a little marked, edges somewhat spotted, contents Good.
