Episcopium, 1542, in-folio, 33,5 x 22 cm, (260)nn pp + 1182 pp + (2)nn pp, (complete, collation identical to Adams R452), bound in full contemporary (?) calf, raised back , joints, corners and headcaps expertly restored , very fine interior , with only some slight thumbing at title page, further a crisp and clean copy, without any provenance indication. Large contemporary manuscript title on the outer margin. First definitive and enlarged edition of this enormous encyclopedic work by the Italian humanist Celio Rodigino ( Ludovicus Caelius Rhodiginus) (1469 - 1525). A first collection of only 16 Books was published in 1516. The author was working on the expanded edition of 30 Books when he died in 1525. His nephew Camillo Ricchieri and Giovanni Goretti finished the work. The author dedicated his encyclopedic publication to the famous bibliophile Jean Grolier de Lyon ( 1479 - 1565). ( See pp. A2) . Both were living in Milan at the time when Rodigino was working at this compilation. He was a contemporary of Erasmus who made some comments on him in his letters. Among his pupils were Julius Caesar Scaliger , Paolo Giovio and Giulio Bordoni.( USTC 605050 ; VD16 R 2165). …
