Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Letters to Mrs. David Ogilvy. Slight shelf wear to top edge of back D/J. These letters are the last major series of her correspondence to surface, having remained in private hands until 1971. In November 1971 they were suddenly offered for sale at Sotheby's in London by Mrs. Ogilvy's grandchild. Elizabeth described Mrs. Ogilvy as 'a pretty woman of quick perceptions and active intelligence and sensibility'. Besides having published several books of her own poetry, Mrs. Ogilvy wrote a memoir to introduce a collected edition of Elizabeth's poems in 1893. From this, the world first learned of their correspondence. In the memoir she states that Elizabeth asked her to keep the letters private. Unsuccessful in tracing descendants, scholars assumed the letters destroyed. Mras. Ogilvy's memoir is published in this volume from her original manuscript as is an early unpublished essay on their friendship. Intimate and highly revealing, these letters inform her valued frieend about her travels, plans and actions. They express her feelings about her private affiars (her love of Robert Browning and his care for her; her devotion to their son Pen and her longing for a daughter). They give her thoughts on subjects ranging from political events to the literary efforts of fellow authors. Especially in the last years of her life when her health declined, they demonstrate a remarkable and passionate commitment to life. 220 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
