Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good, unclipped, slight edge wear to the dust jacket - protected in a mylar sleeve. Noted president of Bowdoin College in Maine, was also known nationally an…d in Washington, D. C. This work also gives an informal history of Bowdoin College. ; B&W Photographs; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 440 pages. Included isa copy of a letter from the author the family of Athern Daggett, another Bowdoin legend concerning the friendship between Sills and Daggett. A much briefer bio of Sills from Bowdoin College: Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on December 5, 1879, Kenneth Charles Morton Sills moved a year later to Portland, Maine, with his parents, Charles Morton and Elizabeth Sills. Educated at Portland High School and Bowdoin College, from which he graduated summa cum laude in 1901 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Delta Kappa Epsilon, Sills earned his masters from Harvard in 1903 and the same year was appointed instructor in English and classics at Bowdoin. Sills accepted a position as a tutor in English at Columbia for the 1904-1905 school year and in 1906 returned to Bowdoin to assume an assistant professorship in Latin. From 1907 to 1946 he was Winkley Professor of Latin Language and Literature and was successively dean from 1910 to 1918, acting president in 1917-1918, and president from then until his retirement in 1952. On November 21, 1918, Sills married Edith Lansing Koon, a 1911 graduate of Wellesley College and former high school teacher; she received an honorary degree from Bowdoin in 1952 for her work at the College. Sills himself received ten honorary degrees, numerous awards, including the Denmark Medal of Liberation in 1946 and the Bowdoin Prize in 1948, and he was a trustee of six colleges and schools, including Wellesley, Athens College in Greece, and the Episcopal Theological School. He was a delegate to many congresses of the Protestant Episcopal Church, a member of the Board of Visitors of the United States Naval Academy, and was chairman of the board of the Carnegie Foundation from 1939 to 1941. As an author he published a book of poems entitled The First American and Other Poems, and he also wrote the lyrics to the song "Rise, Sons of Bowdoin." Sills died in Portland on November 15, 1954. The author, Herbert Ross Brown was a Professor of English at Bowdoin, Managing Editor of the New England Quarterly, and a Fellow of the American Academy of the Arts.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 36 Pages Indexed. Book is in very good condition. The pages are bright, tight, and white. This book is titled The Snow Image A Childish Miracle. The author is Nathaniel Hawthorne with a Prefatory note by Herbert Ross Brown. The book was published by The Bradford Press in Portland, Maine in…1934. Of this book 300 copies were printed in December, 1934, at the Bradford Press Portland, Maine. The text is that of the first American Edition. The Copy No. has been left blank. The front and back boards have no printing. The spine edge has the title and the author but are hard to read. The Snow-Image appeared for the first time in the pages of The International Magazine in October, 1850. A year later the story gave its name to a volume of other twice-told tales which the author confessed he had raked together from the musty and mouse-nibbled pages of old periodicals. To Nathaniel Hawthorne's children, however, this lovely fantasy was a more than twice-told tale. It was their cherished possession before the manuscript reached the hands of the printer. So many times had they heard their father read it they could repeat most of the narrative by heart. The joy which little Una and Julian Hawthorne had in their radiant snow- sister has since been shared by countless children everywhere. In these magic pages, lovers of Hawthorne have found the dew of youth and the freshness of heart, nurtured in the author's peculiar solitude, and never lost in his later rude encounters with the dusty world.
