Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. An association copy, inscribed on the half-title page: "To my good friends Isabel & Cliff Fitzgerald, with many memories of Norias Plantation, Herbert L. Stoddard Sr., Sherwood Plantation, Nov. 25. 1969." An uncommon book in general and scarce signed, as Stoddard died in 1970. And a great association: Clifford Fitzgerald was an advertising executive (see his NYT obit) who bought the storied quail- hunting Norias Plantation in Leon County, Florida in 1962. Sherwood Plantation was Stoddard's 1,000-acre property in nearby Grady County, Georgia. This area straddling the Georgia-Florida border is renown for its "plantations" maintained by wealthy owners, largely from the north, primarily as game reserves. Stoddard based his famous bobwhite study across these plantations and was supported by these property owners substantially. Very likely he studied and hunted quail at Norias. Via his bobwhite studies, Stoddard was an important pioneer of wildlife management. While Aldo Leopold is often cited as the founder or father figure of wildlife management, Leopold himself pointed to Stoddard, writing "Herbert Stoddard, in Georgia, started the first management of wildlife based on research." The two were good friends. As this autobiography details at length, Stoddard was a high school dropout who apprenticed himself to a taxidermist, began to work in a Milwaukee museum, and eventually took to the field and went on to co-found the renownTall Timbers Research Station in Florida. He is also well-known for his studies of the importance of fire to longleaf pine habitat and of bird mortality due to radio towers and what it revealsabout migration patterns. Octavo in beige cloth with olive green endpapers. Several glossy inserts of black and white photos. With a foreword by famed bird artist George Miksch Sutton; the jacket cover illustration is also by Sutton and was done at Sherwood Plantation. And with a bibliography and index at rear. Very good with faint foxing to text block edges, a slight musty smell. One minor bump to lower rear corner of text block that has dogeared a run of about 12 pages. In a very good pale jacket with wear to corners and spine ends, a subtle dampstain to lower spine (book unaffected), and a few short tears or nicks to edges. A nice find, with no other signed copies available as of this writing .

Hardcover. First edition. A 1941 printing, as stated on the title page. Inscribed in the year of that printing on the front free endpaper: "For Dr. Stuart O. Sowle, with the compliments and the kindest personal regards of the author. Herbert L. Stoddard, May 13, 1941." Uncommon signed. On the verso of the FFEP is a gift inscription from "Aunt Sowle" giving the book away to one Dick Thompson with the words, "Stuke would want you to have this" and mentioning "Stuke knew this man." Adjacent on the first blank is a note, taped in with a strip of green cloth (curious), "from the desk of Rupert J. Stibb" thanking Stuke and wondering if he made to it to Sherwood Plantation, which was Stoddard's home and game farm. Seems like he did. An interesting collection of inscriptions. A laid in clipping from The Illinois Natural History Survey (about pheasants) reveals that Sowle lived in Rockford, Illinois, which is where Stoddard grew up. Probably they were childhood friends or acquaintances. The Bobwhite Quail is Stoddard's first and famous book. Stoddard was a high school dropout who apprenticed himself to a taxidermist, began to work in a Milwaukee museum, and eventually took to the field and went on to co-found the renownTall Timbers Research Station in Florida. He is also well-known for his studies of the importance of fire to longleaf pine habitat and of bird mortality due to radio towers and what it revealsabout migration patterns. A small, but thick quarto in red-orange cloth with gilt lettering. Very good with some unavoidable browning to pastedowns from the interior glue, and a few streaks of soiling to the FFEP verso. Interior is very clean with full-page color illustrations by E.R. Kalmbach and many black and white photos. A little rubbing to board and spine edges. All and all a nice copy with an interesting connection to Rockford and Stoddard's roots.

Softcover. Condition: Very good. First edition. An association copy: Herbert L. Stoddard's copy of this Bulletin of the Public Museum of the City of Milwaukee, Vol. 8, No. 1. With Stoddard's ownership signature at the top of the front wrap. A nice item because Stoddard got his professional start at this museum, where he worked as a taxidermist from 1910-1913 before he left for more apprenticeship at the Fields Museum in Chicago. He returned to the Public Museum of the City of Milwaukee from 1920-1924, during which time he first began to spend more time in the field, shifting the course of his career toward research in the landscape (he went south to Georgia and Florida in 1924 to study bobwhite quail for the U.S. Biological Survey in Florida and Georgia). As the introduction notes, this book was the first serious publication on herps in the state in about forty years, since 1889. Includes species descriptions, a key, and 21 black and white photographic identification plates at rear. Herbert L. Stoddard was an important pioneer of wildlife management. While Aldo Leopold is often cited as the founder or father figure of wildlife management, Leopold himself pointed to Stoddard, writing "Herbert Stoddard, in Georgia, started the first management of wildlife based on research." The two were good friends. Stoddard was a high school dropout who apprenticed himself to a taxidermist, began to work in a Milwaukee museum as noted, and eventually took to the field and went on to co-found the renownTall Timbers Research Station in Florida. Ultimately he was known for his studies of bobwhite, the importance of fire to longleaf pine habitat, and bird mortality due to radio towers and what it revealsabout migration patterns. A large octavo or small quarto, perfect bound in gray wraps. Very good with sunning to spine and edges and some light creasing to wraps stemming from spine. A bump to upper right corner that effects the pages, but not so bad. A small tear running about an inch up lower spine. A fantastic item for an natural history or conservation enthusiast, particularly one from Wisconsin, which is known for its conservation.

Softcover. Condition: Very good. An association copy: A bound manuscript copy of Stevenson'sA Key to Florida Birds with Herbert L. Stoddard's ownership signature at the top of the front cover. With the stamps "Presented to the Tall Timbers Research Station by" "Herbert L. Stoddard, Sr.," lower on the cover, as well as the station's library stamp. A scarce book with no other copies available as of this writing, and Stoddard's signature is scarce as well outside of his major work The Bobwhite Quail. The preface begins "It has gradually become apparent that there is a need for a key dealing exclusively with the birds of Florida. . . . The present attempt is in no sense a field key, but is rather intended as a means of establishing the identify of museum skins or freshly killed birds." It finishes: "Reports of error and weaknesses in this key are earnestly solicited from all sources in the hope that revisions may be made to strengthen it. Certainly it is not considered final in its present form." Presumably Stoddard received this copy for his comment. In the finished and expanded version published the following year, Stoddard is thanked in the preface. That 1960 publication is itself scarce, but we have seen a copy. In addition to the key, it includes species descriptions, extending the publication's length. Stevenson was described in memoriam as "the senior authority on Florida birds" and his monumental work wasFlorida Bird Life, which he worked on for 12 years and was published shortly after his death; on the very same day he heard it was going to be published, he suffered a heart attack at the Tall Timbers Research Station where he was a research fellow in his retirement. For more on Stevenson and the making of Florida Bird Life, we recommend this excellentarticle fromThe Tampa Bay Times. Herbert L. Stoddard was the co-founder of the Tall Timbers Research Station in Leon, Florida, and an important pioneer of wildlife management. While Aldo Leopold is often cited as the founder or father figure of wildlife management, Leopold himself pointed to Stoddard, writing "Herbert Stoddard, in Georgia, started the first management of wildlife based on research." The two were good friends. Stoddard was a high school dropout who apprenticed himself to a taxidermist, began to work in a museum, and eventually took to the field. He is known for his studies of bobwhite, the importance of fire to longleaf pine habitat, and bird mortality due to radio towers and what it revealsabout migration patterns. Quarto, tapebound in glossy, textured blue-gray wraps. 67 pages printed only on the verso. Ex-library with a title and call number taped to spine, a barcode a top of first page which holds the preface, and a library pocket on the verso of the final page, as well as a few other scattered brief library notations. Very good with some mild gradated sunning to wrap edges and and a light bump and some resulting creasing to the lower corner. Also a little loss to tape at both ends of spine. A rare find uniting two giants of Florida ornithology and further compelling in light of Stevenson's death at Tall Timbers while a research fellow.
