To meet these demands the Bureau of the Census is continually updating its projections of the national population. Since 1952 it also has published several series of population projections for individual states to 1965 and 1970. Many state and local public agencies, private organizations, and individuals also are making population projections for their areas. In California an Office of Population Research has been established in the Division of Budgets and Accounts of the State Department of Finance as an official agency for the preparation of estimates of current and future populations of the State and its counties and cities. This paper is addressed primarily to demographers and to others dealing with population projections for areas within the United States. Its purpose is to describe some new techniques that may be helpful in making such projections. It also may be of interest to those concerned with recent and future migration between states.
