Proceedings of The Lord Protector and His Council against Sir Henry Vane, knt. for the Publication of a Book, intitled, A Healing Question Propounded and Resolved, Upon Occasion of the Late Public and Seasonable Call to Humiliation, in order to Love and Union amongst the honest Party, 1656. An Original Trial Report from Cobbett's State Trials, part of the great 19th-century archive of courtroom history.

Booklet - Unbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. In 1656, Sir Henry Vane the Younger was summoned before the Lord Protector and his Council for publishing A Healing Question Propounded and Resolved, a tract that urged reconciliation among Parliament's fractured factions. Though couched in the language of unity and godly purpose, t…he book was seen by Cromwell's government as a veiled critique of the Protectorate and a rallying cry for republican resistance. Vane, a former leading figure in the Long Parliament and a committed advocate of constitutional liberty, refused to recant or acknowledge the Council's authority over his conscience. The proceedings, though not a formal trial, marked a turning point in the Commonwealth's intolerance of dissent even from its former architects, and foreshadowed Vane's eventual downfall under the restored monarchy. 5 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 15 x 25 cms. Category: State Trials; State Trials::Octavo; Cosmo Books : 29 years on ABE, 47 years taking care of customers. A bookseller you can rely on.
