Condition: New. Hardback, 565 pagesPublished Price £45 As the centuries pass, war has generally become increasingly hideous. Yet in some respects it is more humane today. The monstrous cruelty which their warring masters used to inflict on dumb animals is now a thing of the past. The South African War, which lasted from October 1899 until May 1902, saw the destruction of some 350000 out of the half million horses employed by the British to win it. The appalling cruelties inflicted upon this mass of horseflesh are fully examined in this volume of Lord Anglesey's magisterial eight volume history. He reveals the horrifying extent of the pitiless barbarity and delves deeply into its causes. In all the vast literature dealing with what is dubiously known as the "last of the gentleman's wars" scant attention has been paid to this aspect of it. Even less has been paid to finding out how such colossal number of remounts were provided. Without them the waging, let alone the winning of the war would have been impossible. Lord Anglesey shows how a miniscule staff, headed by an obscure major-general, organised a brilliant and intricate operation the magnitude of which, until then, had no equal in the history of the British Army. The fascinating story of the war itself, and how the farmers of the veld, natural horsemen and skilled marksmen, humiliated but failed in the end to overcome the regular and hastily formed irregular forces of the British Empire at its height is told here as much in the words of individual officers and men as in the Blue Books and official reports. The other chief subject with which this volume deals is the heated "Cavalry Debate" which followed the Boer War and which continued unabated until the outbreak of the much greater conflict (see volume 7 and 8).This controversy resolved itself into three major questions: Did automatic long-range fire relegate the horse in war to a purely transporting role or could the mounted arm still be employed as an essential part of the Army's "weapons system"? Were the sword and lance bound to face extinction? Would dismounted men firing sophisticated rifles kill off the "cavalry spirit". Book.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. THE GAME IS AFOOT 600 pages: all four Sherlock Holmes novels in one volume. 150+ full-page and incidental illustrations by 6 artists from the original editions. Giant format - 8.5 x 11 desktop size - biggest edition available ANYWHERE - looks great on your bookshelf & provides the ideal reading experience for this classic work. Huge 18pt text, beautiful professional typesetting & high-quality bright white paper stock mean this superb edition can be easily enjoyed by all. University of Life Library Uniform Edition. This unique compilation contains all four legendary Sherlock Holmes novels, complete with their original illustrations, in a single giant-format volume, in large print. A STUDY IN SCARLET - the first Sherlock Holmes story of all introduces Holmes and Watson as they meet for the first time and investigate a strange and seemingly insoluble murder. THE SIGN OF FOUR - Holmes and Watson are visited by a mysterious and beautiful woman, whose puzzling case takes the duo through the twists and turns of fog-shrouded Victorian London as they track down a fortune in treasure stolen from an Indian fortress. THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES - a gigantic, ravenous, glowing beast is loose on the grim and treacherous moors of Devonshire, apparently intent on fulfilling the murderous predictions of an ancient family curse. Can Holmes and Watson save the heir to the Baskerville fortune from a grisly fate? THE VALLEY OF FEAR - evil knows no frontier: an agent of the insidious Professor Moriarty sends Holmes a coded message that entices the detective and his faithful companion to a crumbling English country house, drawing them into a web of bloody intrigue from across the Atlantic Ocean. About the Series: The University of Life Library was founded to publish a uniform collection of beautiful, heirloom-quality volumes of the great works of politics, philosophy, economics, science and fiction, the reading of which could provide all people not only with great enjoyment but, at minimal expense, with the benefits of a traditional, classical education. The Library's titles are chosen to illustrate, reinforce, and promote further inquiry into those concepts and values that originated in the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome and, being expanded and improved-upon by the greatest minds of Europe and the Americas over many centuries, particularly during the Enlightenment, form the bedrock of Western civilization. Being the embodiment of the virtues enabling the creation of the United States of America, that nation most influenced by the Enlightenment's illumination, and founded upon its precepts, each title opens with an illustration of Columbia, based on John Gast's iconic 1872 painting, American Progress. Additionally, each title is illustrated with related scenes. We hope our editions can provide entertainment, education and inspiration to the young and mature alike. We strive to provide a collection of well-loved, widely-varied works that will take pride of place on the bookshelves of families and businesses for generations to come.
