Il y remarque que l'autorité du Pape "n'éclate point d'avantage que quand la puissance des princes et Etats chrétiens est balancée"). Son grand voyage de 1600, durant lequel il suscite l'intérêt dElisabeth I, sera publié après sa mort chez Elzevier en 1646. Ses mémoires composées en exil à Padoue et qui seront également publiées à titre posthume, couvrent la période marquée par la régence de Marie de Médicis jusqu'à la Paix d'Alès qui met fin aux rébellions huguenotes. Early mottled full calf; spines decorated in gilt with contrasting morocco title-labels; all edges dyed red; covers a little worn, with minor surface…loss to the spines; both joints of the third volume (and the front joint of the fourth) partially cracked; minor signs of age and handling; a very good set. This important memoir of the French Wars of Religion by Huguenot leader Henri, Duc de Rohan (1579-1638) was first published posthumously in 1644. It is supplemented in this edition by a selection of his political discourses and by his account of his travels in Europe in 1600. The unspecific Amsterdam imprint would have been used to avoid the strict censorship of ancien régime France. Provenance: 'Château de Percey (Yonne)', with its early library stamp on all four title pages. [4 items].

La dernière page du premier ouvrage est mal chiffrée 284 au lieu de 248. Reliure de l'époque plein veau brun, dos à nerfs orné, tranches mouchetées de rouge. Petit travail de vers sur l'extrémité haute…du mors supérieur, quelques piqûres très discrètes au dos. Intérieur complet et frais. Signature grattée au bas du premier titre. Autre signature de l'époque sur une garde. Note bibliographique manuscrite ancienne sur le premier contreplat (cite le Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes de Barbier).On a pu lire un peu tout et n'importe quoi sur ces impressions données sous le faux nom de Jean du Païs à Cologne : on a pu lire qu'il s'agissait de contrefaçons rouennaises de l'édition Elzévirienne. On a lu aussi qu'il s'agissait proprement des éditions Elzéviriennes elles-mêmes. A la même adresse et à la même date nous avons trouvé des tirages qui diffèrent par les fleurons et les sphères armillaires qu'on trouve sur les pages de titre. Nous avons lu également que le premier ouvrage était de Gatien Courtilz de Sandras (ce qui ne ressemble en rien à son style si marqué). Ce qui est certain c'est que la mention minuscule italique sur l'imprimé apposée au bas des titres indique sans ambiguïté une réimpression clandestine. Par ailleurs la réclame présente au bas de chaque page laisse supposer un atelier d'impression hollandais (ou belge). Ces deux ouvrages accolés (le second a été publié pour la première fois en 1665 seulement) sont un véritable traité de géopolitique avant l'heure, le tout décrivant succinctement mais précisément les relations d'un état avec un autre au sein de l'Europe de l'époque et même au-delà. Ces intérêt sont d'ordre historique, politique, généalogiques, et stratégiques : intérêts du roi de France sur la Flandre, du roi de France sur Gènes, sur Naples, sur le Luxembourg, sur la Lorraine, sur la Franche Comté de Bourgogne, etc. Intérêts du roi d'Espagne sur Jérusalem, sur Sienne, sur l'Angleterre, etc. Intérêts du duc de Savoie sur Genève. Intérêts de la maison d'Autriche sur les Suisses, etc. C'est toute la trame politique et historique de l'Europe du Grans Siècle qui est ainsi décrite. La deuxième partie (ou plutôt deuxième ouvrage) intitulé Maximes des Princes donne une image des différents souverains et de leurs opinions, leurs conduites et leurs décisions tant politiques que religieuses. Ce second ouvrage serait une réécriture du premier dans un sens et un objectif différent. Dans le premier on donne l'idée d'ensemble d'une mosaïque de pays et des règles qui les lient (faits historiques et généalogies royales et princières) tandis que dans le deuxième on trouve une idée générale de la politique de chacun des souverains sur ces mêmes pays (décisions). Ces deux ouvrages furent un véritable best seller à l'époque. Ils ont été réimprimés de nombreuses fois avec quelques variantes. Le premier ouvrage a paru pour la première fois en 1638 mais il a été complètement remanié dans les éditions suivantes et notamment dans celle-ci de 1666 sur l'imprimé à Cologne chez Jean du Païs. Les Intérêts et Maximes des Princes défendent une vision de la France protestante et des intérêts liés à cette religion à l'intérieur comme à l'extérieur du Royaume de France. Rohan était protestant. Pour l'anecdote, les Intérêts et Maximes des Princes furent également saisis le 15 septembre 1666 sur Guy Patin, médecin et bibliophile, qui en transportait 20 exemplaires (A. Sauvy).
