De oprichters speelden in op de explosieve ontwikkeling die de rubbermarkt in die periode meemaakte en de gigantische stijging van de prijzen die er voor rubber werden betaald. Het bedrijf bezat in Nederlands-Indi? twee rubberplantages op West Java. De commerci?le exploitatie van rubberplantages was een nieuw fenomeen, het bedrijf moest in de praktijk uitvinden hoe dit het beste aangepakt kon worden. Dit pionieren gebeurde in Nederlands-Indi?, terwijl de ondernemers probeerden om dit vanuit Amsterdam op afstand aan te sturen en goed te laten verlopen.Mede door de grillige rubbermarkt maakte de onderneming veel ups en downs mee. Toch hield het bedrijf zich staande en maakte het vele jaren winst. De Tweede Wereldoorlog, de Japanse bezetting en het ontstaan van de Republiek Indonesi? luidden een definitieve verandering in. Maar het bedrijf ging door en bleef winst maken totdat het in 1957 door Indonesi? genationaliseerd werd. In 1987 werd het bedrijf uiteindelijk geliquideerd. In dit boek wordt de geschiedenis van dit bedrijf beschreven. De gang van zaken reflecteert het koloniale verleden van Nederland en de drastische veranderingen door de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de oprichting van de Republiek Indonesi? Deze bedrijfsbiografie is mogelijk exemplarisch voor veel bedrijven die in deze periode in Nederlands-Indi? actief waren.

Het boek vond meteen gehoor bij de literaire fijnproevers. Hellema omcirkelt erin de periode uit zijn leven die door zijn intensiteit de belangrijkste moet heten: de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Wat de mensen in die periode elkaar aangedaan hebben is niet vatbaar voor vergiffenis, voor absolutie - maar misschien wel voor verzoening in de een of andere vorm. Zonder een dergelijk ritueel zullen de slachtoffers met een open wond blijven zitten. Ook in de acht boeken die Hellema daarna publiceerde komt zo'n ritueel van tijd tot tijd terug, vaak met verhevigde kracht. Ter gelegenheid van het zestigjarige slot van de verschrikkingen heeft hij een passende bloemlezing uit eigen werk samengesteld.
