Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Kingsmead Press, Published 1984. Paperback, v, 90 pp.; 19 cm; Revised edition; illustrated with black-and-white photographs and hand-drawn street maps. In Very Good condition. Glossy pictorial paper covers show light bumping to edges and corners, mild shelf wear, and toning to edges. Perfect boun…d, binding tight. Pages mildly toned. Otherwise unmarked. Ten walking routes through Bristol, each opening with a hand-drawn street map by Catherine Leendertz. Eason quotes John Betjeman's description of Bristol as "still the most beautiful, interesting and distinguished city in England," and pitches the book at Bristolians as much as at visitors. Routes run from the medieval core at Bristol Bridge and Corn Street out through Redcliffe, Queen Square and the Floating Harbour, up Christmas Steps and St Michael's Hill, and on to Clifton, the Suspension Bridge and the Sea Walls, taking in Quakers' Friars, the Old Gaol gatehouse on Cumberland Road, the Georgian terraces of Orchard Street and the Clifton Observatory. A Supplementary Notes section added for this revision records what the city had lost or altered since the 1978 edition: redevelopment of the docks, the opening of the National Lifeboat Museum on Princes Wharf, the closure of the Old Armchair Inn and the loss of its chair, the renaming of the Bathurst Tavern, and the rebuilding of the Tramway Company block behind its retained seventeenth and eighteenth century facades. Closes with a chronology of Bristol's history running from the Domesday Book to 1956. Photographs by the author, with additional images from South West Picture Agency and the City Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol. Contents: Walk 1 Bristol Bridge, High Street, Wine Street, Pithay, Tower Lane, Broad Street, Corn Street, Small Street, St. Nicholas Street; Walk 2 Haymarket, Newgate, Castle area, Penn Street, Broadmead; Walk 3 Bridgehead, King Street, Welsh Back, Queen Square, Prince Street, Narrow Quay; Walk 4 Bristol Bridge, Victoria Street, St. Thomas Street, Temple, Redcliff Street, Guinea Street, Bathurst Basin, Great Britain; Walk 5 St. Augustine's Parade, Colston Avenue, Christmas Steps, Haymarket, St. Michael's Hill, Royal Fort, Park Row; Walk 6 Counterslip, Old Market Street, Portland Square, Brunswick Square, Somerset Street, Kingsdown Parade; Walk 7 Bridgehead, College Green, Park Street, Great George Street, Brandon Hill, Jacob's Wells Road, Hotwell Road, Centre; Walk 8 Queen's Road, Park Place, Berkeley Square, Park Street, Unity Street, Orchard Street, College Green; Walk 9 Clifton Down, Sion Hill, Caledonia Place, Cornwallis Crescent, Windsor Terrace, Dowry Square, Hotwells; Walk 10 Suspension Bridge, Clifton Down, Clifton College, the Zoo, the Sea Walls, Blackboy Hill.
