Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Minimal eselsohrig, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - Resümee: Als Vorbedingung einer systematischen Untersuchung der Entwicklung des Cognomens in Rom beschäftigt sich H. Solin mit einer Reihe von Bemerkungen, die auf dem I. Band des CIL (die meisten Beispiele lassen sich in die spätrepublikanische Zeit datieren) und den Inscriptiones christianae urbis Romae (3., 4. bis 7. Jh.) basieren. Von insgesamt 1945 Cognomina kommen nur 196 in beiden Listen vor. Die Erneuerung des Namengutes ist in den drei- bis vierhundert Jahren vollkommen gewesen. Als entscheidende Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Serien kann man folgende Erscheinungen aufzählen : das häufige Aufkommen von Familiennamen als Cognomina in der Spätzeit ; die zahlreichen Cognomina auf -ianus, die zum Teil auf kaiserliche Gentilicia zurückgehen. Die Suffixe beschränken sich in der Frühzeit auf -io, -inus, während -ianus für Adoptierungen Vorbehalten bleibt. In der Spätzeit vervielfältigen sich diese Endungen und -ianus wird sehr häufig verwendet. Das Phänomen der Verlängerung führt aber auch andererseits dazu, dass einsilbige wie Ga, Ma, Ge und selbst zweisilbige Namen verschwinden. Man findet auch keine zusammengesetzten Namen mehr (z. B. Philomusus), soweit sie nicht nach dem Vorbild von bekannten Namenträgern (Alexander) verliehen worden waren ; zu ihrer Stelle treten Suffixbildungen und Partizipbildungen, die mit Suffixbildungen im Sprachbewusstsein gleichgesetzt wurden. Die Wortbedeutung spielt ebenfalls eine Rolle. In der republikanischen Zeit gibt es eine Menge von abschätzigen Cognomina, während in der heidnischen Spätzeit die theophoren Namen infolge des Synkretismus häufig werden. Jedoch spielen die rein onomastischen Faktoren eine bedeutendere Rolle. Die theophoren Namen finden sich bei Christen ebenso wie bei Heiden, selbst wenn der Name nicht durch einen gleichnamigen Märtyrer oder Papst zu einem christlichen Namen geworden war. Umgekehrt findet sieh der Name Petrus bei den Heiden. Es handelt sich um statistische Faktoren der Mode, die von dem Bedeutungsinhalt des Namens unabhängig sind. - Wikipedia: Heikki Solin (* 12.
