Issued without a dust jacket. -- Widely considered the "bible" of terrain representation in cartography, originally published in German in 1965 (Kartographische Geländedarstellung) and translated into English in 1982, the book codifies the artistic and scientific principles of depicting the three-dimensional landscape on a two-dimensional map. Core Principles and Content: Imhof, a master Swiss cartographer, provides a systematic guide to the various methods of relief depiction: - The "Swiss Style" [the book defines the aesthetic of the Swiss school of cartography, known for its clear, naturalistic, and plastic representation of mountains and terrain]; - Theory of Colours and Light [Imhof discusses the psychological effects of colour and the use of "aerial perspective" (the idea that distant objects appear bluer and less distinct) to create a sense of depth]; - Specific Techniques such as Contour Lines [their precise geometric use to show elevation], Shaded Relief (Hillshading) [the use of light and shadow to create a 3D effect, including the "oblique light" principle], Hachures [the older method of using short lines to show slope direction and steepness], Rock Drawing [detailed guidance on how to represent complex alpine rock faces and scree], Symbolization [how to balance terrain data with other map elements (roads, labels, water) without losing legibility]. While written before the digital revolution, Imhof's rules for light and shadow remain the foundation for modern Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and GIS software algorithms used today.
