In 1940 he wrote one of the first textbooks on endodontics, "Endodontic Practice", which is now used worldwide. Grossman began teaching at the University of Pennsylvania dental school in 1926 and while there developed methods for removing diseased pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth, sterilizing the hollowed area and filling it with inert material to strengthen the tooth. Before root canal therapy, abscessed teeth had to be extracted. ; this copy was that of John Leonard Pyron (1916-2005) , who, with degrees from Birmingham Southern University in 1936 and a Masters in Education from the University of Florida, taught in Florida high schools from 1936-1946, until he attended Emory University and received a degree in dentistry in 1948.
