Add to basketsoft. Condition: Good. First Edition. Publication: Oxford, Printed at the Oxford University Press for the Bibliographical Society, 1932. Formatting: 8vo, pp. xxviii, 83, [1], plus frontispiece. Condition Report: Good. This copy remains in its original, fragile paper wrappers, which have done well to survive but naturally show ex…pected signs of age and handling. There is general age-toning and rubbing to the extremities, with noticeable creasing and curling to the corners of the delicate covers. The spine exhibits some minor wear and chipping at the head and tail, though the binding remains completely sound and securely intact. Internally, the text block features charmingly untrimmed fore and lower edges. There is scattered, prominent foxing that primarily affects the preliminary pages, frontispiece, and title page, before thinning out significantly as you move deeper into the main body of the text. There are no loose pages, and aside from the spotting, the text remains crisp, tight, and highly legible. Catalogue Note: A true first edition, issued in the original printed grey paper wrappers as Supplement No. 6 to the Bibliographical Society's Transactions. It was customary for Bibliographical Society publications of this era to be issued to members in these uncut, soft paper covers prior to subsequent private or institutional binding, making this a lovely, authentic survival in its original published state. The volume features a handsome frontispiece reproduction of a pencil drawing of John Bunyan on vellum by Robert White (dated 1678), the original of which is held in the Cracherode Collection at the British Museum. While later xerographic, microfilm, and print-on-demand reprints exist on the open market, original 1932 printings retaining their publisher's wrappers are increasingly uncommonly seen and present a charming piece of early twentieth-century bibliographic scholarship. Frank Mott Harrison's authoritative bibliography is a crucial reference work for collectors, scholars, and institutions studying the life and literary output of John Bunyan, the celebrated Puritan author of The Pilgrim's Progress. Meticulously compiled and printed for the Bibliographical Society, the text catalogues Bunyan's myriad publications, sermons, and variant editions, tracing the complex publishing history and scarcity of one of England's most significant seventeenth-century religious writers. Robert White (illustrator).
