Hardcover. Condition: Good. Second Edition. 288, frontis illus., weakness to rear board, discoloration to a few pages, boards somewhat scuffed, some wear to board & spine edges. Abbé Félix Klein (12. July 1862 Château-Chinon - December 1953 Gargenville) was a French priest, theologian and author, who taught at the Institut Catholique de Paris. The author was a chaplain at the American Hospital at Neuilly, which treated the wounded at the front. In the US, he is known as the author of the introduction of Comtesse de Ravilliax's French translation of Walter Elliott's Life of Father Hecker (1896), which started the Americanism controversy. Klein was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1952. Many of Abbé Klein's personal papers are kept in the University of Notre Dame Archives. From the Preface: The American Hospital at Neuilly, to which he was called, was privileged, as soon as opened, that is to say from the beginning of September, to go forth to gather in the wounded from the very Front. . Since that time of anguish, the fields of battle, thank God, have gone further off; but the wounded, brought back from them after twenty-four or forty-eight hours, retain an only too lively impression of them. These notes, taken day by day, will therefore give a sufficiently straightforward picture of the War. If they are worth less than those written by the fighters, at least they come from a witness, a friend, who receives and listens to them still, trembling from the struggle.Civilized peoples, and it is to their credit, so little love war for war's sake, that the greatest crime of which they accuse Germany is of having unchained it. But, though having had themselves no wish for it, though only seeking to rid the world of it and to cut it off at the root, they are fighting to-day with no less courage and no less determination.
