Thick 4to, ca. 500 pp. Many illustrations. After some general essays, contents are divided into sections by country, viz., France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and the USSR.… Text in German. Laid in is an eight-page essay in English "The Axe Has Blossomed. Cultural Rearmament in the Nineteen Thirties. To my Mother on her 78th Birthday" by Jürgen Harten. This helps to capture the sense of the volume better than a literal translation of the German title, as much of the art was sponsored by one or another totalitarian state; avant-garde is not what springs to the mind when thinking of Albert Speer. This particular volume is for the year 1937, so covering the Spanish Civil War and the approach to a general war. Large and heavy volume, foreign customers should anticipate substantial additional shipping charges above standard.
